On the other hand, I felt that Martha Kingston was more of a caricature of a wealthy, drunken socialite. I was delighted by Justin's personality,, though.
My main complaint was the rushed conclusion. Alex, Justin, the police, too neat and tidy. Wanted more action and less telling.
I also prefer a hotter read. This was too tame for my taste. Reminded me of the Harlequin Romances back in the day.
The ranch, owned by Cade Bishop, is a rehab for abused animals and retired racehorses. Cade believes in second chances for these animals as well as for Laura. The attraction is strong between this pair but both fight it.
I really liked this book and didn't want to put it down. The suspense had me wondering if Laura was going to be found, would she be able to keep her baby, would she get together with Cade? I like WINSEC stories and while Laura wasn't in that program, she was in hiding with a new identity so that had me wanting to read it right away. It was so well written that when we learned about the violence Laura endured it wasn't hard to handle because we didn't get detailed descriptions. I loved the characters. Laura turned out to be a much stronger woman that she thought she was. I liked her a lot. Cade was kind and gentle with the animals and Laura, for that matter, that you just had to like him. Being handsome didn't hurt either. I loved the way the people of Evers jumped in to help Laura even though they didn't know her.
I've easily given this book 5 stars and highly recommend it to romantic suspense readers.
For readers who are looking for a strictly "clean" story, this isn't it; although, the one sex-scene is so quick that you could skip the (less than one) page and not lose any of the exciting story.
I would enjoy reading other stories by this author.
Laura is an amazing women who battles a lot to come out on top at the end.
Cade is just as amazing as I remembered and I feel in love with him all over again watching how gentle and protective he was
Love and Protect was a quick read and while there were some aspects I didn't like, ultimately I really enjoyed the book.
Cade was probably my favorite aspect of this book. He was patient, kind and wonderful for Laura. I enjoyed seeing him work with animals and helping them learn to trust again and find new homes. Red was absolutely adorable and I love how she took to Laura immediately. Laura was where this book didn't work for me as well. She flip flopped back and forth in her decisions a bit too much for my liking. By the end of the book though, she's much stronger and surer of her decisions which ultimately made me like her more as a character.
The suspense plot was an interesting one despite not having a ton of action throughout the book. I enjoyed the aspect of Laura bring on the run. The last few chapters of the book were mainly where all the suspense parts were, so I'd suggest not going into the book expecting suspense the entire time.
Ultimately, I enjoyed Love and Protect and will check out the rest of the series in the future.
She is an abused wife and has been planning to run from her husband and just before she can he is found dead. She still runs and with help gets to the doctors friends ranch in Texas,. They take her in and she falls for Cade who will do anything to protect her. The whole town tries to hide her but they do find her. Strong emotions and a great read.
