Skylar Jernigan is new to Jessamine and after moving around most of her life, she feels like she's finally found a home. She's enjoying the children she teaches music to even if she's being razzed by her neighbor because of the noise. Not long after a scathing phone call from her neighbor Mason, she is alerted to the fact he needs help after he takes a fall. She goes to help and she quickly becomes the one person Mason doesn't detest being around.
As the two form an unlikely friendship, the begin to realize there is more to what they are both feeling. While Mason is still in the midst of dealing with his PTSD, Skylar knows if she's patient, everything could work out for the best for the both of them. That is until the day that Mason tells her he's only using her to try to get back to the life he was living before. Needless to say, things end between the two right then and there.
When the call comes from his former commander telling him the Navy wants him back, Mason begins training hard to get back to the life he once had. When things don't go as planned, his brothers try to point out what the most important thing should be to him. Will he take their advice and open his eyes to the best thing life has to offer?
Marquita Valentine has done a fantastic job creating a story that deals truthfully with PTSD and how it not only effects the sufferer, but also their friends, family and acquaintances. I really enjoyed this story and I'm looking forward to the next Lawson brothers book!
Mason is grumpy and fun and wonderful. He has real issues and is suffering from PTSD. He wants everyone to leave him alone except for the heroine, Skylar. Skylar is funny and cute and she gets Mason. There are no other relationships to get in the way, no exes, no sex with anyone else and in fact they wait til they really know each other for sex.
This story is purely story and character driven and its the best in the series, maybe even the best that the author has ever written.
For me the author is a hit or miss. Meaning some I enjoy and some I get turned off by the sample and others I have to skip parts because I don't enjoy certain scenes. The reason is the author likes to show you the H and h with other lovers, exes, and I HATE that. Those are the stories of hers I try to avoid and she does this in many, many of her stories. Especially in small towns this is even harder to read about. But this book had none of that. It was pure fun and pleasure. The obstacles for the couple are related to Mason and whats going on in his head rather than anyone else.
The end of the story features a small excerpt/chapter from the next story about Tristan (Mason's twin) and Lemon and unfortunately she is going again to the exes and other lovers thing again. Its a pity because in this story you see what she can really do when she actually concentrates on the couple. This story was pure romance and I wish she'd do what really works and stop trying to create a plot by throwing in exes and other lovers.
Skylar Jernigan was raised in the Carnie with her Dad. Her mother left when she was a child, and they moved constantly. Her Dad finally found a job with a paper mill, and they set down roots. But her Dad succumbed to one of the poisonous chemicals they used, and Skylar was on her own. She wandered for a while, then moved to Jessamine, bought a house and set down roots. She supported herself by teaching music and being a substitute teacher at the local school. Life seemed pretty normal until she finally met the "grumpy old man" next door. It was not a pleasant meeting, but after hearing Mason's story her natural instincts to help kicked in. Despite his constant complaining and bickering.
There is a beautiful love story in this book, the build up only makes it sweeter. Before Mason realizes it, he needs Skylar more than he needs to breathe. The banter and quips between these two are hysterical and I found myself really falling for Mason. Skylar becomes friends with one of the McCoy sisters, Lemon, and even takes a road trip to Holland Springs. The one thing Mason can't push from his mind is his life as a SEAL and he feels he is a danger to Skylar. He turns away, but knows it will destroy him. The epilogue......sigh...... is perfect. If your a fan of Ms. Valentine's books, you will love this visit with the Lawson brothers. If your not, what are you waiting for? Grab this book.
