Not A Sweet or Clean Romance

The writing style is great. The energy of the plot is good too with a promising premise. But to tout this as Christian Romance, or even a Sweet one, went too far. The main character, having never been kissed, kisses a guy after knowing him for less than a day, then when she meets another guy, she catches him naked and stares at his body, lusting after it, and starts to dry hump him later. I stopped at that point. This leans on the racier side of romance as it details scenes of nudity and graphic depictions of sexual liaisons. I was disappointed and surprised to find these things in the book. I would never have started to read it had I known.

This book was listed under Christian fiction, which is why I downloaded it. However, I only read a few chapters before I realized that it is obviously mis-labled. While the language was fine and the writing excellent, the content does not fit what I would consider religious fiction.

This was a lot more boring than the last. This is historical fiction, so I was hoping the author would spice up her back a little more with some action. I love her other books outside of this series and was extremely surprised at this one. She drowned on and on about details of the world. She spent pages describing a room the characters being standing in. Sure, spend a paragraph. But I don’t need 3 pages detailing the wallpaper, couches, etc. I spent half the book flipping past her monotonous details and it still took over a week to force myself into reading. Then I have concluded that this will be a trilogy! There was just so little in this book she could have combined the whole damn series and leave out the wallpaper.

Alex goes to war, wins the war (not a spoiler, this is a fictional retelling so of course America is formed), he and Eliza move to New York, and then he has a trial. That was it! When the last one comes out I’ll skip it and listen to the Hamilton soundtrack instead.

James met Deborah the night before he was shipped out to war. There he became a prisoner of war for years. Deborah eventually have up on him and met Rip . She was torn between waiting for James or marrying Rip. She married Rip and was happy with him for a lot of years till he died. James found a photo of Gloria before he was captured and held as a prisoner of war. Her photo kept him from giving up when he was a prisoner and he fell in love with her before he even met her. He finally met her when he was released from war. He showed her the photo and told her she helped him she he was a prisoner of war. They married and had a lot of happy years together until she died. Deborah was living in a senior citizens home and met James again when he was moving to a house by the Home. They never got over each other and reunited after all these years.

You have a bit of Deborah & Rip's story, then it definitely becomes Jame's story & his search for Gloria. The finale becomes Deborah & James' story again.

Wonderful story of life & how God's input can certainly make a difference, some folks call it fate, Christian know it's God's hand. You will enjoy this well written read.

The story was fast paced which maintained one's interest, however, I would have appreciated one more chapter before the conclusion about the adult lives and marriages of the main characters. It was somewhat glossed over. Also, although the cover of a springtime house is charming, a cover that depicted a military man with young love would more appropriately attract readers to the title and genre.

Light weight characters and unbelievable situations. One of the characters met the love her life 50 years ago, that very night, at the age of 17, which makes her 67. However, we are told at "almost eighty" she's getting ready to meet him again. It was a while before we were told that the war was in Korea but later when the heroine was searching on the docks before her love was shipped out she was told that the vessel's destination is Vietnam. Far too many convenient coincidences.
I'm always reluctant to leave negative reviews but the only positive I can find is that it's a free read. Sorry.

I did quite enjoy this book but felt it was a bit far fetched in places. Deborah met James the evening before he leaves to go war. She is only 17 but he becomes the "love of her life" until she meets Rip, a war veteran suffering from shell shock. Now what I couldn't understand is that they both spoke about a soldier called James, but neither thought to wonder about the coincidence, as I saw it. James was declared missing in action and Deborah married Rip. When James manages to make it home he searches for Deborah. I won't give anything else away, you will need to read the book to find out!

Meanwhile somewhere else her first love is trying to find a girl in a photo. It must be over 60 years later they end up living next door to each other and the rest is history .... a very pleasant read on a very grey day!
