SHE’S WRITING ABOUT HIM. HE’S WRITING ABOUT HER. AND EVERYBODY IS READING BETWEEN THE LINES.

For Erin Blackwell, majoring in creative writing at the New York City college of her dreams is more than a chance to fulfill her ambitions—it’s her ticket away from the tragic memories that shadow her family’s racehorse farm in Kentucky. But when she refuses to major in business and take over the farm herself someday, her grandmother gives Erin’s college tuition and promised inheritance to their maddeningly handsome stable boy, Hunter Allen. Now Erin has to win an internship and work late nights at a local coffee shop to make her own dreams a reality. She should despise Hunter . . . so why does he sneak into her thoughts as the hero of her latest writing assignment?

Then, on the day she’s sharing that assignment with her class, Hunter walks in. He’s joining her class. And after he reads about himself in her story, her private fantasies about him must be painfully clear. She only hopes to persuade him not to reveal her secret to everyone else. But Hunter devises his own creative revenge, writing sexy stories that drive the whole class wild with curiosity and fill Erin’s heart with longing. Now she’s not just imagining what might have been. She’s writing a whole new ending for her romance with Hunter . . . except this story could come true.

I read this book during the Mu Alpha Theta National Competition and hated that I only had a few minutes to read here and there. This book was one that I wish I could have read without putting it down! The friction between Hunter and Erin is beautifully done. It truly is a Love Story between the two of them.

Hunter and Erin volley back and forth in her creative writing class with their feelings for one another. It's a little like watching a ping pong match as the story continues. However, at the same time there are moments in between where their interactions hint at different feelings. Add in a crazy bunch of friends and the story holds your interest and keeps you guessing about what is going to happen next.

I will admit I was nervous about adding in the horse aspect to the story. This is probably one area I am completely not interested in. I have never cared for horse races, etc. However, it was a small part of the story itself so I didn't feel like I needed an education in horse racing.

One of the reasons I tend to be leery of love stories is because it seems many authors need some sort of tragedy to bring the characters together. I have never really been a fan of that type of writing because I read to escape things. I really liked that Jennifer was able to write a beautiful love story that holds your interest without a horrible tragedy that left me sobbing. There are may conflicts even after some realizations are made. I often get bored with simple love stories and this was not the case. The storyline was very complex as well as the characters and their behaviors.

For once I really don't have a criticism about a book. I really loved every part of it. I would also like to add that I think this story would translate really well into a movie and would love to see that happen. I give this book a 5/5!

I am a fan of Jennifer Echols (having loved Going Too Far and Forget You) and was looking forward to Love Story for months. I pre-ordered the book as soon as it was available and waited anxiously to receive it. But before I could read the book, I did something bad---something I never do. I read other people's reviews (usually I wait to read other reviews after I have written my own review). And they were for the most part lackluster. I lost my excitement over Love Story and could not get the anticipation back. I finally decided to read it for myself, and sadly, I agree with most of the reviews I read: Love Story is a good book but something was off.

Let me start with what I liked. I like the way Echols writes. I love her attention to detail. I love the way she builds relationships---they usually progress slowly, so that when the characters finally get together it means more to me. I especially like the way Echols writes teenagers. The portrayal feels so realistic and her books really take me back to my teen years.

While Love Story was a good read, it was nowhere nearly as good as Going Too Far or Forget You for me. To be perfectly honest, the first line of the story turned me off: I hate the name Captain Vanderslice and those initial feelings of dislike set the tone of the book for me. I know that's shallow and judgemental of me, but those are the facts. I never really connected with Erin and the "poor rich girl" act got old for me. It felt like it took forever to get some chemistry between Erin and Hunter---although I did enjoy their story, I just didn't love it. Something about the book as a whole felt lacking for me. In fact, as soon as I closed the cover on Love Story, I went straight to my bookshelf and picked up Going Too Far for a re-read. Now, that's a book I can get excited about!

If you are new to Jennifer Echols, I would recommend starting with Going Too Far or Forget You. Love Story was a good read, but not her best (in my opinion).

I love a great romance with all its conflicts, embarrassing moments, and quirky friends which capture my emotions and leave me breathlessly waiting for the beautiful, passionate resolution. Well, I am still waiting! As great as the beginning of this story is, it just ends - abruptly.

    ****Some Spoilers throughout****
Erin has grown up rich by not emotionally unscarred. Her mother was beat-up by her father and after leaving him, found love then, was accidentally killed by a started race horse on her mother's horse ranch. Erin was raised by her emotionally distant grandmother who wants her to take over the family business by majoring in business in college. She refuses, and her grandmother gives her college money to Hunter along with the promise of the ranch as an inheritance.

Hunter is the son of the work hand her mother fell in love with when she was killed. They were friends before the accident, but Erin withdrew after her mother's death and now is furious with him for taking her inheritance. On the day her first writing assignment is to be critiqued by the class, Hunter is admitted into the group and hears her first story - it's about him.

He definitely has feelings for her, but she refuses to see them as anything but hate and her own feelings of resentment prevent her from really looking closer. But they are in the same dorm and they have two class together and end up spending some time together as they write their assignments about each other for class.

Erin starts to believe that his feelings for her are real when she overhears a conversation between him and her grandmother. Now she knows the truth - or she thinks she does.

This was definitely an entertaining story with great secondary characters that made the plot more fun. Summer was a great friend to play off of and her relationship with Hunter's roommate was a fun secondary romance. Staging it at college was also more interesting and helps set the maturity level a little higher than high school. It is a good place to see relationships away from parental authority but still subjected to it.

But, still the ending - so unsatisfying. All this angst and feuding to be just summed up in the last two pages. I would have preferred more dialogue and more romance to this resolution. It just felt sudden and tentative. These two are never congenial for long, so a more convincing declaration of forgiveness and love would have been more satisfying.

I am definitely a Jennifer Echols fan and loved "Going Too Far "and "Forget You". I actually think I like "Love Story" the best, although, "Going Too Far" was really great. I would definitely be willing to read a sequel to Love Story and consider this ending a cliff hanger (cough, Ms. Echols, cough).

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes
Would I read it again? Yes
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Not What I was Hoping For
Reviewed in Canada on September 17, 2014
I was hoping for a flirtatious, sweeping love story out of this one... and what I got instead was not that. Not even the in-class short stories satisfied my desire for that flirtation.

Instead we have Hunter, who thinks he knows what's best for Erin, who is constantly sheltering her, telling her what she can't manage and pushing her back to her old life. And we have Erin, who is defensive, jealous, and has a chip on her shoulder about escaping her past.

These two could have worked, they could have! But rather than emphasize the romantic possibilities, I thought this story just underlined all the ways in which they failed to communicate with each other. They had moments where it seemed they could get along, and then all the things they weren't saying or dealing with - or all the wrong things they were saying - intruded.

After finishing the story, I keep going back, hoping to see the various scenes in new ways, but... *sigh* This book just didn't leave me rooting for the couple, nor did it leave me feeling warm fuzzies as I would expect at the end of, well, a Love Story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good book from Echols
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2011
Firstly if you are a fan of Jennifer Echols (like I am) this book is not as good as Forget You or Going too Far, which I would say were five star books. The reason for this is just that the ending was too abrupt, the book needed to be longer!

We have two main characters, Erin and Hunter. Erin has started college in NY majoring in Creative Writing against the wishes of her Grandmother who wants her to study business so that she can take over the family horse business. Erin's grandmother has decided that the farm will now go to 'stableboy' Hunter who will study business at NY.

Erin and Hunter have family issues that tie them together but from the beginning it is clear that they are also attracted to one another. They have unresolved issues which will begin to be revealed through the creative writing course that they both take. The book begins with a story that Erin has written for the creative writing class and as Hunter joins the class we also read pieces of his work. They were good to read as they really helped give the backstory to these characters. I thought that the discussions between the characters and their friends in the class were really funny .

It was refreshing to read something set outside of high school! I would have preferred for the characters to have gone out a bit more, most of the action takes place in their dorms or creative writing class.

An entertaining and sweet story but could have done with a better and fuller ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something missing, but still enjoyable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2012
Oh I wanted to love Love Story by Jennifer Echols a lot more than I did. I liked it, it was an enjoyable read, but the magic and tension of say, Going Too Far, was a bit missing in this book. I felt that in some parts of the story it felt like too much of a stretch to believe the character's decisions and motivations. And because of the distance between myself and the story, I didn't become as emotionally attached as I'd have liked. Still, Jennifer Echols does know how to tell a good story!

Love Story is the story of Erin, a girl in college, who wants to be a writer and decides to pursue this dream even though it means giving up her family and their support, as they'd rather Erin manage their family's affluent racehorsing farm. So we begin our story with a story - a historical romance that Erin has written heavily based on real events that took place and on people that Erin believed would never appear in her creative writing course! But then in walks Hunter and it is the start of a lovely little book filled with denial and attraction and unravelling the secrets that fill Hunter and Erin's past.

I just generally love when stories and storytelling appear within books, and when it happens in Love Story, it seems to take on a whole different meaning. Both Hunter and Erin use the stories written for this creative writing course to anger, upset or make jealous the other person, and at the same time, we as readers are given a closer insight into who these two characters are and what they are about.

This isn't my favourite Jennifer Echols story, but there was plenty here to enjoy. I love that Erin and Hunter are both older teens, dealing with college and future employment. There is a lot of family drama that unfolds and a quick peek into their very different social circles. There's plenty of arguing and stubborness here, but there's also some really sweet and heartfelt moments. I look forward to more by Jennifer Echols.
