Since the revolution, everyone's lives have been changed. There is no more freedom. The dictator rules the nation with an iron fist, and unrest swallows the land. This is the story of a sad turn of events that prompts Gerald to do his own thing to buck the dictator, in his own inimitable way. While the premise of this story is excellent, and certainly unique, it didn't keep me quite as spellbound as other readers.
There is a small group of revolutionaries who Gerald knew when he taught at the university. They are in hiding, but make occasional visits to Gerald's shabby home. In all of these visits, the reasons for them doing so are not very concrete. I kept expecting more to come of it. It seems as if the author simply couldn't get a good grip on them or figure out exactly how they were supposed to be part of the story.
Another thing that bothered me is that when I first started reading this book, I was sure it was taking place a hundred years ago but then the author mentions cell phones and ear pieces that guards are listening to. The time and the place was never well defined. We are never even told a location for this "country," Apparently it had won some struggle for independence with France before the current dictator, Antoine, stepped in, but does that mean it's in Europe and near France? Or, is it some imaginary possession of France's left over from colonial days?
I do want to emphasize that the idea of this story was really very good. I just don't think it was handled as well as I would have liked in order for me to want to devour every page. At times, in fact, I glanced at my place to see how much longer it would last. I read the blurb about the author and find he's an award-winning playwright anddirector, and has had plays produced in many places. So, who am I to criticize such a renowned individual? I'm just a reader who felt that the characters and the way the story was written didn't "grab" me. Most of the conversations were stilted and added nothing to trying to get to know the characters.
There was one other thing that greatly bothered me: SPOILER ALERT! At the end of the book, the people get their way and the revolution occurs. Then only ONE MONTH after the revolution, people gather in the square where a statue to Gerald is unveiled. A LARGE statue, because all the names of the people who gave their lives in the revolution are engraved along the base. I don't really know all that much about making a large commemorative statue, but logic tells me this simply could NOT be totally completed within a month. Especially with all the engraved names of hundres of people. Wouldn't coming up with a statue take quite a bit more time than 30 days?
A Love Story for a Nation is about a writer how has suffered great loss. He lossed a son before he was born, and then to lose his wife. His wife has made Gerald Sanpantri pick up his pen and to begin writing once again. He finds a note from his wife telling him to smile and he does exactly that. It's one amazing emotional action packed thriller that will keep readers turning the pages and asking when the next novel is coming out for reading. I was stunned at how remarkable the story turned out to be. Loss, love, danger and the meaning of courage can all be found as secrets are unveiled. Definitely, would recommend this novel to readers world wide. Highly engaging read that all readers will love. Overall, I rate A Love Story for a Nation a five out of five stars.
It is almost impossible to adequately express in words how moved I was by "A Love Story for a Nation". The plot of this incredible tale sent shivers down my spine on more than one occasion. Author Mark Sasse is one gifted writer. The depth of his ability to connect with the characters in his stories which permeates through to his readers, to those of us clinging to every word he pens, is beyond description. I'm a huge fan...plain and simple.
This suspenseful novel is more than a love story between two people celebrating their first anniversary. Gerald and Rosia Sanpatri share a much deeper connection. Gerald is a banned award-winning author, a former university professor, a man of great brilliance with strong revolutionary opinions...who now lives a mundane and repetitive life as a bank guard at the A.S. National Bank. For personal reasons, he has chosen to keep his past life a secret even from his beautiful and devoted wife, Rosia. Little does Gerald know that she has secrets of her own which are about to tear his heart apart...
As both of their past lives come back to haunt them, Gerald Sanpatri decides to take a firm stand to combat his love, his loss, his feelings of betrayal, but most importantly his deep love and devotion for his nation. With a simple smile and the desire and determination to make a difference, Gerald makes the decision to "stand firm" with a never ending smile on his face. Unexpected twists and turns arise at every corner as Gerald Sanpatri mentally and emotionally takes on the persona of Jonny as he battles the evil dictatorship of Antoine. One simple, kind-hearted man who loves his country...can Gerald really make a difference?
I wish there was higher than a 5 star rating because I would definitely give it to this mesmerizing novel. Loved it!!
