THE SECRET LIFE OF DAYDREAMS has a storyline I've never read before. A former missionary goes back to the area where he served his mission 11 years later, and meets the young woman he baptized. One of the main issues is she's very active at church and will only marry in the temple; he hasn't been to church in 6 years since his marriage failed.
Sofia has so much going on--working, applying for graduate school, caring for her mother who's recently been diagnosed with dementia--and she tries to do everything by herself. Josh has left behind his career in architecture to become a photographer who travels around the world, rarely seeing his family in Utah.
I liked that the problems each of the characters faced were real life issues and weren't glossed over or easily fixed. I liked that Sofia had friends who supported her and that she didn't use her trials as an excuse not to participate in church. I like how Josh was always there to help her, even with what could seem like little things--to Sofia they weren't little things. He had such a kind heart. I wish we had found out the source of Josh's issues with church earlier than we did. I didn't understand why he stopped going to church just because his marriage ended. It isn't mentioned until almost the end of the book when his grandfather makes him talk about it. The author does a wonderful job describing Portugal and helping me imagine it as I'm reading.
ONE SMALL CHANCE--is another storyline I've never read about before. Pen pals for 15 years finally meet--one of them knows but the other doesn't. When Simon (Elliot) meets Isabel (Amélie) at work for the first time he realizes it's the woman he ran over with his bike a few days earlier. It gets worse when Isabel finds out that Simon is her new assistant, that no one told her she was getting, and she thinks he's after her job. Then she runs into him at church. She can't seem to get away from him.
I thought this was a sweet story, and I really thought Isabel might figure out who Simon was as she and Elliot continued to email each other, and he started giving her clues about his new job and the people he worked with. Elliot was always nice to Isabel even when she was kind of rude to him, he understood the situation at work took her by surprise and he really wanted to tell her what was going on. I liked the description of Elliot's clothes and his fun socks, and Isabel's cooking ability that she got from her grandmother. I was happy when Isabel finally decided to pray about the situation at work and got her answer. The ending was perfect--I was afraid Isabel might be upset that Elliot didn't spill the beans sooner. This story reminded me of when I was young and had pen pals--back when people used to write to each other. This is also a sweet (completely clean) romance.
I loved this sweet story with a "You've Got Mail" theme. The characters are well-fleshed out and the story and plot has a full arc. It didn't feel too short like novellas often do and when I finished the last page I just had to sigh in satisfaction. The setting of Portugal played a huge part in making the story stand out. It was so fun to imagine the foreign location and accents and the vivid descriptions were subtle without taking over the narrative. I was able to connect with both Isabel and Simon and felt the emotions they were experiencing as they grew closer together in spite of the struggles they face. Highly recommend!
The Secret Life of Daydreams:
What a lovely setting! I enjoyed "traveling" to Portugal and experiencing the culture of the region through Sofia and Josh. They are unexpectedly reunited and the time they spend working together makes them never want to be apart, even though there are obstacles to having a long-term relationship. Josh comes to her rescue several times and she helps him open his heart back up. Sofia has some heavy burdens and trials, but her faith and the support of her friends helps her stay strong. Josh is floundering and wallowing in his life's disappointments, yet still reaches out to others and serves with compassion. The plot seemed to drag on in the middle when there wasn't any progress in their relationship or Josh's issues. I felt like he was a stone wall not only to Sofia but also to the reader since any details about his past and spiritual choices were saved for the very end of the book as a sort of reveal. It prevented me from understanding his situation or fully connecting with his character and I definitely felt Sofia's frustration with him. However, the ending wrapped things up nicely and I was happy to see everyone happy again :)
