I knew there was a reason why I loved Brooks so much from the first book. This book totally solidified all those reasons why I fell in love with him in the first place. Love Survives in essence is a retelling of Love’s Suicide but in Brook’s POV. HOWEVER, Jennifer gives us so much more than just a retelling. We get a front row seat into Brook’s head, how he felt, why he did what he did and most importantly we get to see what he was up to all those moments from Love’s Suicide when he was gone. If you think you are rereading Love’s Suicide in an alternate POV only, let me reassure you that the parts in Love’s Suicide that you already know are just half of what you really get in this one.
“I won’t sugar coat the details of what I went through to have her, nor will I apologize for any actions that led me right back into Kat’s life.”
Jennifer gives us a very raw and emotional insight into Brook and his life. The story takes us on a different kind of journey where we see how hard life for Brooks really was living in the lies and deceit that his brother orchestrated all so he could have Kat all to himself. We get to see how much Brooks is affected. We really get a very deep understanding to the level of depth his love runs for Katy even though he can’t have her. There are many ugly and emotional moments that happens throughout the course of the story that definitely will keep readers on their toes. Hearing about all that time when Brooks and Kat were apart after that night when they finally were able to be honest with each other was hard to read. All of Brook’s time in the service is gut wrenching at best but honestly it certainly gave me a greater appreciation for people in the military.
“My only focus was to get to her, hold her, and contemplate never letting her go.”
Brooks love for Katy never died not even for a second and I really love how this author gives us that time with him to fully appreciate and understand their story. Brook’s perspective is filled with so much anguish, angst, despair, love, hope and determination. Knowing how this story ended didn’t take away from feeling everything Brooks went through. His heart being shattered and torn apart was really hard. His level of despair and sadness was overwhelming. Jennifer really did an amazing job writing this book and giving us a different spin on a story we all fell in love with. Both books can be read as a standalone but I’d highly recommend reading them in order because you’ll have a greater appreciation for their love story.
“I had to pursue her because I’ve loved that girl since we were children. She’s everything to me.”
While reading the first book I always wanted to know how Brooks was feeling and thinking and now we have those answers. Love Survives isn't a complete retelling of the first book, because it is from Brooks's POV so there is a time when we don't see anything about Katy. If you have read the first book you will understand what I am saying. I would recommend that you read Love's Suicide first because you need to know Katy's side of the story first before you dive into Brooks's. Things will just make more sense to you if you read book 1 first.
This book is just as long as the first one, but just like in Love's Suicide, Jenn is able to suck you in and hold onto your attention throughout the whole book. You will want to keep turning the pages until you get to the end. AS usual this is another book I didn't want to see come to an end. Even though I knew what happens, this book still felt fresh and new to me. I am not going to rehash all the details of the storyline, because if you are aware of what happens in the first book, then you know what this story is about.
What I did really enjoy was seeing what Brooks went through while he was a ranger in the Army. Jenn put such detail into that part of the story, that she made me feel like I was there with him. What he experienced in the Army was horrific, and I couldn't imagine having to see everything he did. It truly made me appreciate the sacrifice that the men and women of the armed forces take on to protect our country. During this time of the story we were introduced to some new characters, who were friends of Brooks in the Army. These friends and love he had for Katy is truly what helps him keep going on.
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, but especially if you are a fan of Jenn Foor's. You truly don't want to miss these two fabulous work of literary art!!!
