About the author

If you ever meet a senior citizen who says she's living her dream, that's me. I spent years of my life teaching music, running a Dairy Queen, and stocking a MiniMart. And then I discovered writing. That's when I knew who I was truly meant to be. Now my books are sold all over the world, in four languages, and even in Japanese manga! Oh yes. Thanks to my dear readers I'm living my dream!
"Always beautifully set and with a mysterious twist or bit of suspense, Laura’s books average over a million pages a month read by her loyal readers."

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book..
If you know anyone who suffers from addiction this story will hit home how hard it is to give it up.
I didn't feel a connection to this couple because their loved happened before the story starts. I was confused in the beginning. Was she really staging an apparent suicide? What happens to her in the beginning happens off page.
I understood the H reaction when someone he loves almost dies because the h was hooked on opium and needed her medicine and wasn't paying attention. The H at one point breaks his ribs and basically recovers in a day - not realistic at all.
I loved the doctor and Molly. I especially wanted more back story on Molly. Story dragged in the middle but felt rushed at the end in who was the ringleader.
Lovemaking within marriage - bedroom door fully closed.
Part of a series, but is a stand alone.
I didn't consider the H cheating, because he was told his wife was dead. No cliffhanger, HEA, little on romance and clean except for kisses. (ljb)
I feel betrayed because I have read many of the author's books and was following her on Amazon. I just unfollowed her.
What happened? The writing in this book is almost childish. There are no details; there is no subtlety. The author spells things out that should be obvious. She tells what people are doing and thinking instead of showing it. And with many of the previous books of hers I've reviewed, so much isn't plausible. It should be obvious to Jack why his wife was gone, but he is mad at her for not returning. And it's hard to like him when he's had plenty of sex while he was grieving. He sneaks into a place after dark and "lights" a candle. How? Wouldn't that draw attention? And whoever Mollie is, she is really able to get around for some reason. I stopped reading at 16% because I couldn't bear any more of it.
Annalise Washburn is in Hell, and can't face the only way out.
There is a lot of emotional turmoil in this historical romance. Dangerous smugglers and addiction to battle. Our protagonists need the strong pull of deep love to even want to take the risks.
Although this book is part of a series it's easily read on it's own. Only a few meetings with the characters in the other stories.
A very different sort of story for a historical romance.
An enjoyable read.
