I love how Kimberly Johnson develops her characters so that the reader is really pulled into the story. Nicole and Mark are both in Sunriver for a relaxing time after some difficult circumstances. The reader is able to learn about those and the effects they had on Nicole and Mark. Sunriver sounds like the perfect setting for them to find one another and heal. I cannot wait for the next story in this series. I received an advance copy in order to give an honest review
The characters, Nicole and Mark, forge a friendship that develops very naturally and sweetly- even awkward moments are included, and the unplanned banalities of running into someone you know in a small resort town. That also goes for how Nicole and Mark meet and develop friendships with the secondary characters, Spencer, Sarah, and Connor. I only wish that the friendship between Nicole and Bailey (the designer who helped her with the master bedroom makeover) had been developed further, as it seemed it was going to be, or else not at all (felt like a misdirect, for some reason; I thought maybe Nicole would end up witnessing to her, or at least give Bailey a makeover). Oh, well.
The plot is engaging, and the addition of the burglaries and how that involves both main characters is woven organically and neatly into their lives, individually and together. However, in regards to the scavenger hunt Nicole's Grams (her late grandmother) sends her on through the story, I found myself way ahead of Nicole on the end game on all counts, and kind of wishing I could send her a message to help her along. ;)
Back to Mark and Nicole: I loved that their friendship was central and inceptive to their relationship... the time given to get to know each other, the grace shown when their wounds are revealed, the respect and modesty modeled, and especially the few and brief sweet kisses shared that don't lead anywhere else. (Thank you, Kimberly!) This book is perfect for the romantically-inclined teen and young (or old) woman who needs help keeping her thoughts captive (I wish it had been available when I was younger).
There was an issue with the timing at the end (when Nicole's game is completed and Mark's future plans are determined, which seem to happen on the same day), whether it was just a couple of days after the burglaries are solved, or a couple of weeks...? But it doesn't change the fact that this was a very sweet and clean romance that I would be very happy to find my youngest daughter reading on her own (in a few years- she's only 9!). :)
This is my first book by this author.
It was a sweet romance. Nicole, a teacher on summer break, is sent on a scavenger hunt by her late grandmother.
Mark, a big city cop, is taking in a smaller role to overcome a recent tragedy.
The book was a great quick read.
I like the premise of the scavenger hunt but think the author could have added more to the journey and clues. For example:
Grandma prepaid to have the master bedroom remodeled to Nicole's design. Nicole meets with the designer. they become friends and construction begins. The construction and redesign is mentioned but we never get to see the reveal. All that was said was "Thankfully, the remodel was finished and had turned out lovely. The owners would be thrilled when they saw it."
That being said, I did enjoy the book and will still recommend it to my friends.
I would like to read more from this author.
The author did a great job detailing many of the places which make up the uniqueness of this village.
I enjoyed the fun relationship between Nicole and Mark even tho it started out a little rocky.
I also got a kick out of all the many clues her Grams had for her. I was trying too solve them right along with Nicole.
