Love Unmasked is the first book in the Candy Apple series by Elodie Parkes. I had a on the fence reaction to this book. If you can suspend a lot of belief and look at this book as purly entertainment I think this book is really well done. The problem I had is I couldn't really seperate myself like that. I kept thinking wow sometimes stalkers do find love. I was not really at ease with Scott's persona. Stalking someone, pretending to be someone you are not, and well not really having a problem with that, I have issues with that. I tried very hard though to see this as just entertainment. I would say if you have no issues with stalking or even obsession then unlike me you could just know this is a story.
Tom he is a sweet guy. He forgives everything Scott does way to easily though. I found myself really liking Tom for being an average sweet kinda guy. He is a hard worker and deserved a true love.
Over all, I really like Ms. Parkes writing she makes me really feel for the characters. I also feel very attached to the story. Having said that, that might be why I had issues with this story. I say go into this one with an open mind, know it is just a story and you will love it. For me I am on the fence. I think the author did her job though and brought to the table a memorable well written story.
Four twinkling Stars
Scott Palmer is in love with a mystery man that lives opposite him. He “spies” on him, he can't help himself and longs for an opportunity to meet him. He knows nothing about the man, not even if he’s gay? – sounding a bit stalkerish? well not really….ok, maybe a little bit. And that’s the route I thought the author was going to take, but I was wrong!
Scott decides to follow his “obsession” (you can see why I thought him a Stalker) and finds out that he works in a Club. The Club is called Candy Apple and Tom (Scott’s obsession) is the Bar Manager. It's a private club and after a bit of on-line research, Scott applies for membership (still stalkerish though). Of course this is a steamy love story, so both Scott and Tom meet, but as the Club is holding a Masquerade Ball, both are wearing masks, so Tom doesn't see Scott’s face. After a very sensuous and steamy encounter between them, Tom wants to see Scott again. This of course causes problems for Scott. He told a few little white lies to Tom, including his real name, but also horror of horrors, Tom knows that some “creepy guy” is watching him from across the road where he lives and the one thing Scott cannot let Tom find out, is that he is the “creepy guy”. Will Scott be able to hold onto Tom when he finds out that is the creepy guy? Read to find out yourselves.
Now I have to say that I'm really getting into Elodie Parkes easy, sexy style of writing, it really is quite addictive. I've only read one other book of hers and this was so very different, which only highlights her creative talent. What I liked about this book was that she didn't overplay her hand, she kept it realistic, you could see how this chain of events could of happened and the mess that little white lies can create, was very plausible, we try and get ourselves out of a hole but end up even deeper than before! The Masquerade Ball’s mix up between men was again feasible (that jerk was exactly that….a jerk!).
The author gave us a bit of everything – stalkerish MC, insta-love, hot salacious sex scenes, a well thought out plot, a bit of angst and a masked and unmasked love story. Thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to see what this author has up her writers sleeve next?
5 big fat stars from me.
****I would like to thank the author for the privilege and opportunity of reading this ARC. My review is an honest opinion of the book****
Scott becomes a member of club to get closer to Tom. Tom has a sexy encounter with a masked man during a masquerade ball held at the club, but the man won't reveal who he is. The two men meet again at the next masquerade ball, and have even steamier sex, but Tom still doesn't know who the man is. Will Tom ever find out who the masked man is, and does Scott have any connection with him? I really enjoyed the sweet passion of this book, and the hint of mystery was an added bonus.
ARC given for an honest review.
