Editorial Reviews
Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will driver her to the brink of insanity and murder. With a visual style that pays tribute to Technicolor thrillers of the 60s, THE LOVE WITCH explores female fantasy and the repercussions of pathological narcissism.

I gave it 5 stars because I actually got the jist. Lol The storyline is ridiculous, over-acting abounds, continuity doesn't exist AT ALL, and the horrific acting must've been a requirement to even be considered for a role in this D-movie. Perhaps a few of the actors even had a casting-couch audition or two 😉. It was meant to be all of these things, guys! It was written to reflect the terrible horror films of the 60's and 70's, etc except they were serious back then. I'm not sure they even realized the movie and the acting was bad. But this movie here was meant to be horrible... and it's hilarious! Someone even pulled out a cellphone for God's sake! 🤣🤣 Great stuff truly! If you have a sense of humor and you don't have to use a crowbar to pry your butt cheeks apart when it's time to take a poop, you will enjoy this movie for what it is: stupid... and hilarious!

This is not a traditional horror film that you are going to turn off all the lights for grab some popcorn and get ready for some jump scares or fun unrelenting carnage, like the Descent or Evil Dead or something. This is an experiment in 60's era film making, which is done remarkably well. Casual viewers are going to find it weird, poorly acted, nonsensical, sexist, weird, not scary, confusing and did I mention weird? Cinemaphiles should appreciate it's unyielding dedication to its concept, from the weird plot, to the bad 60's acting (intentionally done in this case), the nonsensical plot (by modern standards), and the weirdness...all done in a fashion that served the overall concept. Even the instances that clearly had to involve some modern technology not available at the time blended seamlessly. And in spite of the protagonists somewhat archaic, patriarchally submissive, sexist motivations the film clearly had a strong feminist subtext. Samantha Robinson is fantastic and perfectly captures the essence of the films nature. I felt so weird once this film had ended but I could hardly say as a film enthusiast I did not enjoy it. If you are looking for a good scare in a horror film or something fun and carnage filled there are probably better choices, but I certainly feel as if I gained something by watching this movie. It was a good movie.

I'm a fan of b movies and retro horror, and I can groove with a weird artsy fartsy film that was someone's labor of love but I really disliked this movie. Yes, the commitment to detail was cool, and I admired the director/writer/etc etc etc's commitment to the look, but the rest of it was bogus and self masturbatory and disappointing on every other level. A little research into any form of witchcraft might have helped?
In the modern world it would be nice if women could be feminists without being man-haters. I wound up wondering if this isn't actually a sad film about historic damage from sexual abuse that would be better dealt with in a psychiatric situation. I get its supposed to be retro, but other than than the clothes it really isn't. The one use of a cellphone kind of ruined the idea this was the sixties. which gave me a real ok, wtf?!?!? feeling. and not for the first time. Overall this was a mess, too long, not at all feminist in any legit way, Although definitely intensely and weirdly anti male (and I don't mean in the parts when the guys die... I mean the whole attitude.) But women get their fair share of hate too. But at least the chicks get groovy makeup and get to be featured in some hideous high school level oil paintings. I guess. Boys and Girls, there are way better weird cult films out there. This one is a waste of your time unless you plan to watch it on fast forward with the sound off.

Samantha Robinson is exquisite, and the film is hilarious. Absolutely worth the money. I adore this film.
It’s like a throwback to the past, done in the present. Clever, funny, and hip. If you’re a fan of the genre, you can’t go wrong, plus you get to look at Samantha. That’s 5 stars on its own! 😍

I usually love this type of movie but this is absolutely horrible!!! The acting is so bad especially by the lead actor who talks to herself throughout this Film. Consistently in a unemotional Voice with no interjection of feeling. I couldn't make it through the whole movie. Please do not rent this even though like me you really enjoy this genre.

I’ve watched this several times already. I love the whole aesthetic and cackled with glee over her wicked ways. Just when you thought all beautiful actresses had been scared away from Hollywood by Harvey Weinstein, this was a refreshing delight. I want to see more films in this vein from Anna Biller. Heck, I want to join a coven of hotties!

This movie rocks. It is one of a very few movies out there that function as extremely self-aware "period" parodies. These require niche actors, incredible editors and people who understand the subtle nature of the history of camera work. You will enjoy this movie is you have enjoyed the Lost Skeleton of Cadavra and its sequel, Black Dynamite, The Brady Bunch Movie, and the Addams Family movies! Cheers!

Absolutely loved this movie! It had real witch practices mixed in with some nonsense and carefully used witchcraft to explore its feminist themes. A true witch doesn't believe in these hierarchical gender roles, but remember this is set in the 60s, back when they were really into 'polarity'! And people of all religions still buy into the misogynistic mindset today. I'm sure the creepy rapist priest is based on real coven leaders who abuse their power and convince women that sex with them = freedom. There are a lot of religious leaders who take advantage of their followers, unfortunately. The film intelligently explores how both men and women are trapped in our toxic misogynistic society. I also love how it isn't 'magic' per se that kills the men- it's her behavior. Elaine doesn't feel safe with men, after having been abused her whole life. She drugs them and keeps them at a distance to protect herself. Is she crazy? Yes. Living through misogyny makes women crazy, that's the point!

'70s throw back- must have for your cult movies collection

Blur-ray arrived next day with my Amazon prime. Pristine condition and packaging. Love witch is exquisite for its visual trip, stylistic choices and true colours of 60s-70s era (even though it is supposed to happen in present). Elaine, a love witch, runs away from her past to a new life in California. An eternal romantic, continuously searching for her Prince Charming, she uses sex magic to seduce men into loving her. Insatiable to her quest, she is never satisfied until she meets the one. She is using what women know best to get what she wants from men and doesn't stop even when a man can't love her in the way she wants to. A true critic to sexism, patriarchy and a smart way of passing her feminist ways. Give this movie a shot with open mind. Some reviews comment on the long and slow run of the movie- however this movie needs time to set the tone, to say what it wants to say. Just emerge yourselves into this journey of witchcraft and love between the two sexes and you won't be disappointed.

It's another horror favourite in my opinion. I've watched this movie on film4 months ago except I couldn't watch the whole movie because the time was later. This movie was a two hour show & I could only watch about fifteen or twenty five minutes of it. The movie was a very bright, colourful & spellbinding. The actress Samantha Robinson was extremely great at playing the role of 'Elaine' & making her love potions was another mysterious effect as well. Among the rest of the movie the other characters were great as well & the settings & costumes were very bright & flamboyant. The special effects were great & the music was like hip & they were great as well. 'The Love Witch' movie is definitely a thumbs up & it's definitely worth a watch!

A witch's love story

Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a seductive young witch who mixes potions in her quest for love, picks up men and puts them under her spell before leaving them dead.
The Love Witch” mixes genres – black comedy, slight horror, sex and shades of feminism with more than a passing nod to “The Stepford Wives” – as auteur Anna Biller pays homage to the independent “B” movies of the 1960s. Although the storyline may be slight, she more than well compensates with loving detail to that earlier era, gorgeously presented with startling set designs and blazing colour as the story unfolds with a minimal amount of dialogue, deadpan performances from the male actors and incidents that include a witches coven and a medieval gathering and mock wedding. Previously ignorant of Anna Beller, her earlier film “Viva” has now been added to my viewing list.

A very imaginative brilliantly directed & edited film and a truly wonderful performance by Samantha Robinson - it doesn't wish to be interpreted just a wonderfully immersive experience neither feminist nor 60s pastiche or homage just a very well made film.
