"Dan White Jr. has aptly diagnosed, we cannot heal our divides until we've confessed our fears--cannot overcome fear until we've committed to love. With fascinating cultural artifacts and compelling biblical stories, Love Over Fear enriches our imagination for love, not as sentiment, but as the embodied, patient practice of embracing the other. I have great hope that with this book in hand, we the church can begin to move beyond "Us" and "Them" into our healing role as the people of God."
~ Jen Pollock Michel, Author of Surprised by Paradox, Keeping Place, and Christianity Today's 2015 Book of the Year, Teach Us to Want.
"What a highly practical and hope-filled book Dan White Jr has given us! Love Over Fear disrupts our deep tendency to be polarized against each other, while offering us a unique path forward toward healing. This desperately needed and timely message dives into the life of Jesus for real ways we can continue the work of reconciliation today. Love Over Fear is a gift to all God's people."
~ Bruxy Cavey, Teaching Pastor at The Meeting House, Author of(Re)Union
"In each epic of history, social issues frame the way of being the church in the world. In Love Over Fear, Dan White Jr. is a careful guide through the challenges and opportunities facing ordinary people. With brilliant nuance, he gives a pathway of faithful witness both personally and as a movement."
~ Hugh Halter, Author of Tangible Kingdom, Flesh, Brimstone
"Is your soul fatigued by our polarized world? Love Over Fear will breathe oxygen into your lungs and speak hope into your ears. Simple yet profound, vulnerable but strong, grounded in the words and ways of Jesus, and full of wonderful stories, Dan White Jr.'s book is the help we need for these troubled times."
~ David Fitch, Northern Seminary, Author of The Church of Us vs. Them
"By unmasking the ferocious fear that divides us, Dan helps us to see our enemies as people, not monsters. He puts real flesh on the kind of love that can heal us. He passionately reminds us that truth and love is found in a person - Jesus, the One who embodies a limitless love that hasthe power to create family from enemies. This is a book for our polarized times!"
~ JR Woodward, Author Creating a Missional Culture, co-author, The Church as Movement, National Director, V3 movement --This text refers to the paperback edition.
From the Back Cover
Tired of hearing how polarized we are? Want to do something about it?
Whether it’s the news, social media, or well-intentioned friends, we’re told daily to fear "others." We fear strangers, neighbors, the other side of the aisle, even those who parent differently. And when we’re confronted with something that scares us, our brain sees only two options:
Attack or Avoid
But either way, polarization intensifies. What if you could defy your own instincts and choose a third option—scandalous, disruptive, unthinkable LOVE? Sure, we love people who are like us, who are easy to enjoy. Everyone does. But what about our enemies, the people we consider monsters? Loving them requires exceptional strength—strength only the Holy Spirit can provide.
Love over Fear is a compelling guide to conquering fear with love in an age of polarization. Hear stories of those who changed hearts and minds through radical love, learn how to practice disarming compassion, and discover the disruptive power of showing affection to monsters.

My heart wants to dig in against those that are on the other side of my political and social opinions and convictions. I want to fight fire with fire. But then I look at Jesus and the helpful trail that the author has blazed and feel I am better equipped to go into this wilderness with a trustworthy guide. I don't know Dan White, Jr. personally, but he seems like the kind of man I'd like to sit down with liquid nourishment and talk about the Kingdom of God late into the night.
This is a very good book.
1) Fear is the foundation of the division rampant in society, and
2) Love has the power to overcome fear
Understanding #1 isn't too difficult. With a bit of neuroscience, Dan does a good job explaining how our base nature triggers automatic responses that drive fear, division, and even hatred.
I really love how Dan used #2 to demonstrate how our higher order reasoning ability (again, with a bit of neuroscience regarding the prefrontal cortex) can overcome our base nature. Since shockingly few people likely utilize their prefrontal cortex on a regular basis (on the order of 10%, according to some studies!), it should come as little surprise that we find it so hard to allow perfect love to cast out fear.
Then the absolute kicker is the use of affection to disarm fear, and tear down the monsters we've allowed our minds to create. If your heart is troubled by how divisive our conversation has become, I recommend that you let this book shine God's light into the darkness and give you a glimmer of hope both now and in the world to come.
One thing you will notice is how many questions that Dan asks of the reader. It produces a pause in thought, as if he is asking you to turn your brain on, instead of telling you "what" to think, he asks you to "consider" the possibilities and solutions.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has been paralyzed by fear, and those who seek to bridge the gap that built-in fears and prejudices create.
Easy read. You'll enjoy and be challenged to be the agent of change.
Not only will you find your way out, but you'll get your joy back.
I can't begin to express how much this book helped me, but my worn out highlighter knows.
Page after page I read, then highlighted, then reread.
This book is a treasure.

Using Jesus as our prime example, neuroscience, and psychology, Dan White Jr. weaves together a way forward through tense and charged conversations that seem to force you to choose one side or the other (as if those were the only two sides to consider).
Regardless of political views, religious beliefs, or social justice agendas, Love Over Fear provides hope in an ever-increasing polarized world, showing how to engage in polarizing conversations - all the while making friends out of once perceived enemies.
