This is not your typical shifter story where boy meets girl, they have an instant attraction or love and they fight obstacles to be together. It is a sweet story about two people, each damaged in their own way, working to resolve their pasts and form a bond of trust and friendship with the potential for more.
Nathan is a polar bear shifter, who cannot control his shifts and becomes more wild animal than man once in fur form. He is unstable and potentially dangerous to himself and others when shifted and requires the assistance of his older sister and a friend to keep him in line. Being found standing over the dead body of his mauled mate and terrified he will be accused of her murder, he takes no time to explain the situation just turns and flees. Now on the run and needing to hide, he breaks into Clara’s house to rest; only to be confronted by her. Feeling an imminent threat to himself, he shifts and attacks her; causing several injuries. Feeling guilty and still needing to lay low, he offers his assistance in her recovery and she reluctantly agrees.
Clara has escaped to her own little safe haven to be out from under her mother’s constant fussing and watchful eye. As a talented cellist suffering from muscular sclerosis and mostly wheelchair bound, she has grown tired of the pitying glances and quips about her condition. Just wanting peace and solitude she has moved far away from home learning to be dependent on herself alone. When she finds a stranger, a shifter no less, breaking into her home she goes to defend herself; being injured in the process. Unable to do her chores or be completely mobile on her own, she agrees to let him stay and help out. Even though he was wanted for murder, there was something about him that made her feel safe and protected.
A tenuous friendship is established in the weeks they are together but with them both harboring secrets from their past can they be more to each other without sharing their truths? Can two broken people help each other to heal? When Nathan’s past catches up with him, will he be defeated and return home to live under his sister’s control or will he make peace with himself and his bear?
I received an ARC copy of this book with the option to leave a review.
Nathan has a rare shifter disease that makes it difficult to control his bear and Clara, a gifted cellist, with MS. Both are defined by their diseases and find the courage in each other to break away from said definition.
I had received this book as an ARC, and I am really glad that I had this book. I honestly think that in many ways this was maybe K.T. Stryker's best book so far, as it is far more than just the usual fear or angst that her characters deal with.
Not just a romantic shifter story, it is a story deep in the development of human character.
A great book
