I have to give a warning about this book before I tell you how good it was. For me, it moved a little slow. I’m not going to lie, there were times where I was wishing things would move along. Not that the story wasn’t good, but you know me, I love the action and drama. That being said I liked this. I thought it was cute. I feel bad for the guy who gets hurt in the end, and no I won’t tell you who. But sheesh, the drama that goes down...Man! Didn’t see that happening. I don't know I would've waited as long as she did. I think it was unnecessary and drawn out, but that is just me. I think all parties involved deserved to know what was going on. And then when she had to take her sister to the clinic, OH GOD.. my heart broke for her and her sister both. I could never make that decision, but gladly it wasn't my choice to make. And man, it felt like she was never going to get what she wanted. However, for the ending we have, I really don't feel bad anymore. It's perfect. The way it all works out.. Wonderful. Love always prevails. Anyway, Ali is a lawyer and she is a handy little lawyer. She's a little sleuth on top of being a good lawyer, a sneaky little woman willing to do whatever it takes to get the proof she needs. She sure surprised the hell out of me. But I do have to admit, I did get the creep vibe from her client. He creeped me out the whole time. Even after the court case was over. I felt like she needed to keep an eye on him at all times. Just major creep factor.
I mean what the heck is up with the mobster guy!?!?! I don't know how she did it. But she stuck it out, while pregnant at that. While upending her whole life, making major life decisions. And don’t even get me started on the baby daddy drama!! It was epic. Like I said. Perfect ending to the whole situation.

I read this author's more recent book Weak at the Knees which I enjoyed so much that I downloaded this one straight away afterwards. I love Jo Kessel's writing style. It's fresh, engaging and page-turning and her stories are refreshingly different from the norm. At the heart of Lover in Law is a very sexy romance (Anthony is now officially my new Book Boyfriend) but there is so much more, from a big and exciting court case to the paternity of Ali's baby being in question. I couldn't work out how the book was going to end and I was kept guessing all the way. And I wasn't even sure who I wanted the father to be - although without giving anything away the ending feels perfect. I loved that this book was set in London so much that I'm now thinking of going for Christmas. I will definitely be reading more Jo Kessel in the future.

It's entertaining, and I like the author's voice in this book. I always like to read something a little different than most books in this genre, and this was definitely different (in a good way, of course). The only thing I'd suggest is maybe for the author to cut down a smidge on the (!) marks, not that it's invasive or anything. Otherwise it's pretty well-written.

4.5 Stars!

Ali Kirk has decided to start her new year off right. Last year she let things go and she even began to lose some cases she had as a lawyer. She is trying to have a baby with her long time boyfriend and wondering if he will ever marry her. Now she has a huge case that could be just the thing she needs for her career. She is helped by the new colleague Anthony. She finds him attractive but is committed to Adam. Her control doesn't last and she ends up having an affair with Anthony. Then her other wish comes true she becomes pregnant. Not knowing who the father is she had called it off with Anthony and wants things to work with Adam. She isn't sure who the father is and worries about what will happen when the baby is born. Having the huge case going on and now she knows she has to come clean with Adam before the baby is born.

Ali is a character that at times is hard for me to like. She has a guy who loves her very much but isn't one for marriage. She does love him but gets torn with what she feels for Anthony. I don't agree with her decisions at times but I will say at others I could see where she was coming from. She is a great worker and tries to do her best to sort things out. Adam I liked but sometimes I wondered like Ali what was going on with him. He walks away a little to easy for me at times and others he seemed so sweet and caring. Anthony I didn't want to like but I couldn't help it. He is there when Ali needs him and never pushes her into anything.

This is one of those books I picked up one night in the thought I will just read a few pages and the rest the next night. That didn't happen. I had to keep reading to see just how things would work out. The author does a great job creating characters that you just have to know what they will do.

Ali is a high-flying attorney, a bit overwhelmed by her own personal dramas and feeling vaguely unsatisfied in her eleven year relationship with Adam. Personally, I think that despite her modern chanting of “I am woman, hear me roar” she is essentially searching for a solution to the vague disquiet she feels, and doesn’t dare examine. Adam was the center of her universe, next to her job and the occasional reprimands she extends to her twin sister Kayla. She has set all of her eggs in one basket, and when the cracks start to show, she begins to project her own dissatisfaction toward Adam.

Anthony is a new solicitor in the firm, a very high flier he arrived with several accolades and is very accomplished in the criminal defense arena. When a celebrity client’s case turns from a reasonably minor traffic complaint into a murder investigation, Ali is brought on as the junior council to defend the client. Their attraction is instant and magnetic, and Ali, in a moment of self-sabotage, takes the step over the line from colleague to lover.

Throughout the story we have several instances of Ali’s inability to follow through on her stated desire to make things work with Adam, and to stay away from Anthony, as she also is dealing with her desire to have a baby and her sister’s ongoing man issues.

While it sounds as if I didn’t enjoy the story: I really did. It completely displayed the many different factors that can contribute to the demise of a relationship, and the harm that assumptions and quick conclusions without all of the facts have on those little voices of disquiet that exist in everyone’s head.
