Editorial Reviews

In celebration of Barbara Cook's most recent Kennedy Center Honor as well as her soon-to-be 85th birthday Carnegie Hall celebration on October 25th, DRG has produced and releasing a brand new, never before recorded album of her latest catalog of songs. Recorded at the famed Avatar Studios in New York, this jazz styled album (a first for Barbara) brings a totally exciting dimension to this legendary performer's career. Backed by Musical Director-arranger-pianist Ted Rosenthal, the quartet made of up Jay Leonhart, Warren Odz, and Lawrence Feldman. It should be of no surprise that Barbara takes us on a great ride with new batch of songs both familiar and rare.

I think I have everything Barbara has recorded and I can't believe that I am saying this, but I think this is by far her BEST CD. Every song is so perfectly delivered and perfect for her voice. Even at her age (sorry to mention this), but her voice is still superb and better than most singers these days. Buy this, you will love it!

When I heard the first track, "Let's Fall in Love," I was initially disappointed. For the first time Barbara Cook's beautiful soprano sounded tired and...dare I say it...showing her age. However, the rest of the tracks of this lush and beautiful album made up for it.

The songs run a greater gamut than most Barbara Cook albums these days. There are slow and luxurious numbers, fun and sprightly numbers, and everything in between. She even shows once or twice that Barbara still has her top notes.

A must have fan for any Barbara Cook fan and recommended listening for anyone interested in the American songbook.

After all these years, the burnished,, gleaming sounds that emit from Barbara Cook are still thrilling. The amount of care and love she gives to her musical choices eaily explains her fabulous longesvity and her gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for maintaing a living library, Ms. Cook, and reminding us that great art only endures when it is appreciated. If it were up to me, your endurance will remain eternal.

At any age, Ms. Cook would do these standards justice, but at 85, her renditions are remarkable, her voice still pure and like silk. I have seen her many times over the years and honestly think she is singing better as the years go by. I saw her recently in concert perform a prorgram that included works on this album and left elated. She is a national treasure and like her live concert, which this abum sounds exactly like, "Lover Man" never disappoints.

Ms. Cook at 85 is better than most other singers who are decades younger. Granted, her voice can't do what it used to, but she still knows how to sell a song in truly superlative fashion, & she uses the darker quality of her voice brilliantly. A real must-have for Cook fans.

I love everything she does. I was at her Carnegie Hall concert in the 1970s and have been a fan ever since. You won't believe this woman is over 80 years old. She sounds as fresh as brilliant as she did then. In the fall she was at Carnegie Hall again promoting this new CD and she sang several songs from it. House of the Rising Sun stands out in my mind...not a song you'd expect her to sing. And "The Nearness of You" is brilliant. But my personal favorite is "If I Love Again." If you've never heard this song, it's worth it to get this CD just for this song. I first heard this song when Barbra Streisand sang it on the "Funny Lady" soundtrack. I fell in love with it then. No one sings this beautiful song anymore....but now Barbara Cook has her impeccable performance of this wonderful song on record for all eternity. Love it!!

Barbara Cook, unlike most artists, has been exceedingly productive past age seventy. The prinicipal difficulty she faces is the death of Wally Harper. She is now changed arrangers again. This change led her to select the songs for this album. The tone of the music is dark, as the cover phot suggests. When Cook is happy, you will never be sad again. When she gets into the dark places, oceans of Prozac will not boost your spirits. This is a very dark album. Her a capella performance of the House of the Rising Sun is terrifying. Her take on the Billy Joel anthem New York State of Mind pulls his oeuvre into the Great American Song Book. As always this album is essential because she is the leading interpreter of the American Song Book. This is her some of her best work, but at the same time the lack of a theme, common to most of her work, places this work at the middle of her pack.
