Had this story not featured the manipulative shrew of the female character, who is the only female character, which has more than couple of lines in the story, I would have given it five stars for sure.
As it stands - 3.5-3.75 stars
We know Trey is in trouble when his future father-in-law passes right over the part of the press conference where Trey was to propose to the witch, Paige. Then we discover that her family is concerned that his might not be up to par with their social circle. So she has hired a professional genealogist to trace Trey’s family history to make sure there aren’t any skeletons that might fall out.
When Trey meets Ewan Matthews, there is an instant spark, but Trey is a total jerk and Ewan almost quits before he starts. He perseveres and things get strange. Ewan is having dreams about men that look just like him and Trey, but not contemporary dreams. They range back through time from the early twentieth century to the American Revolutionary War and even further back to a pirate and a guard captain sometime well before that in the Caribbean.
I enjoyed the flashbacks. I kind of wondered why only Ewan was having them, and Trey was instead having dreams about Ewan playing a starring role in one of the trashy romance novels that Trey reads and Paige detests…
Something is odd. Why are these two men being drawn to each other? When Ewan and Trey team up and start to uncover family members in Trey’s family, all of them having a “friend” with the same last name as Ewan it looks even odder. When pictures show up that show two of the men and they look just like Ewan and Trey, it is beyond odd and must mean something.
I enjoyed this story. I liked the flashbacks through the past, and meeting the men in them. I liked Ewan, although he annoyed me when he kept pigheadedly refusing to disclose his strange dreams to Trey. I liked Trey as well. He annoyed me by staying with Paige…I kept saying “ditch the bitch and make the switch” under my breath as the story went along. Did he? Not going to tell you. Read the book!
I recommend this book. It was contemporary mixed with historical, and I’ll be honest it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what was going on, but it was an enjoyable read anyways.
