About the Author

Peter Tupper’s writing has appeared in Wired magazine, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the Globe and Mail, the Utne Reader and www.TheTyee.ca . He is a co-founder of Metro Vancouver Kink, a non-profit BDSM community organization in Vancouver, BC, and remains active in the BDSM scene. He has researched and blogged about the history of consensual sadomasochism since 2005, and has presented at The Art of Loving in Vancouver, BC, the Center for Sex Positive Culture in Seattle, WA, and the 2012, 2013 and 2016 Master-slave Conferences. He has also been a guest on Graydancer’s Ropecast, the Masocast, Jack Rinella’s Leathercast, Erotic Awakening and the People of Kink podcasts. He edited and contributed to Our Lives, Our History: Consensual Master/slave relationships from ancient times to the 21st century (2016), which won the 2017 Geoff Mains Non-Fiction Book Award from the National Leather Association: International.

Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Peter Tupper studied history at the University of British Columbia and journalism at Langara College. One of his first professional fiction sales was to Circlet Press’ S/M Futures anthology, and his first book was the steampunk erotica story collection The Innocent’s Progress & Other Stories.

His non-fiction writing has appeared in Wired magazine, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the Globe and Mail, Maisonneuve, the Utne Reader and www.TheTyee.ca.

He is a co-founder of Metro Vancouver Kink, a non-profit community organization for Vancouver’s sadomasochism community.

I downloaded the Kindle sample and was impressed by the coloful illustrations, so I decided to order the $36 hardcover book. What a HUGE disappointment. The illustrations in the hardcover book are in BLACK AND WHITE! To add, some of the images are fuzzy. Don't waste your money on the hardcover edition. If you are interested in reading the book buy the Kindle version instead.

Human beings have always been "kinky" if you consider kink to be any type of sex that might not create a baby. Tupper does an excellent job of citing and contextualizing some of the commonly used "kinky tidbits" from history until he gets to the Victorian era where he spend the bulk of this book. Rightly so, since before that time, Western culture wasn't set up for a consensual kinky relationship. My only disappointment in the book is the rushed post-Victorian period; I would have preferred that Tupper dig in even further to that time period in Europe and possibly America to really question if consent was truly possible.

A fascinating history of sexuality, specifically that of the oft misunderstood subset of sadomasochism. For many, when they think of sadomasochism (s/m), they think of leather clad bikers, whips and chains, Bettie Page, and 50 Shades of Grey. While all of those things certainly have their place within s/m there is so much more to the history and it's fascinating to read about how it has evolved over the centuries. Broken into easily readable sections, Peter Tupper, does a remarkable job of piecing together the fragmented history of s/m all the way back to the Catholic Church, the ecstasy of the saints, the schoolboy whippings, the Marquis de Sade, all the way up to modern times and the advent of the internet. Although it is very scholarly, it is still a titillating read; and how could it not be? It's an eye opening book that not just s/m fans will enjoy. Newbies, scholars, and those well versed in BDSM will still find something new and exciting between the covers of this book ;)
