I had to take a few days break and skip a few pages that dealt with things that are completely against my moral beliefs, but after a few days I was able to pick back up and finish reading the book with no other things weirding me out. I loved the angst, the main characters, the British references, and the basic concept of the story. I know that sometimes fate plays cruel jokes on us but it's what we do about them that helps us grow and evolve into the people we are meant to be. This is not a book to be taken lightly and the subject content is not appropriate for all, so be forewarned.
Will I pick up book two? Probably, because I know the characters already and I know it will be tastefully written by this author.
Will I read another book about incest in the future? No.
This book is so well written you almost don't think of them of brother/sister but more like soul mates that can never be truly together. It's simply heartbreaking.
You can't help but share the passion with Donovan and Lily. The passion and true love is just there. Your rooting for them to somehow overcome there many emotional problems with this situation. So much abuse poor Donovan goes through you can't help but just be heartbroken how shattered he is and yet Lily can make it all better.
Diane Rinella handled this topic with grace and did a fantastic job. I already picked up book two and plan to start reading it tonight. Highly recommend this if your open minded to taboo subjects.
It's the story of Lily and Donovan. They're soul mates who have loved each other as best friends their entire lives. They've known each other since birth because... They're brother and sister.
Their entire lives Lily and Donovan have shared a special bond. They're not typical siblings but best friends. They have always gotten along and did/shared everything with each other.
In high school Lily starts to realize she sees Donovan as more than a brother or friend but someone she has true romantic feelings for. Donovan also shares these feelings. They know they're meant to be together, soul mates in its truest sense.
Once they both acknowledge their feelings they decide to embrace them but are kept apart by forces unknown to Lily.
Suddenly, Donovan isn't the sweet, kind man Lily has always known but a temperamental jerk with anger issues. He pushes Lily away, leaving her heartbroken.
Trying to mend her heart she embarks on a relationship with Christopher. He's charismatic, talented, and British. Lily loves him but she's still in love with Donovan.
On the rare occasions Lily and Donovan meet, she is able to get fleeting glances at the man she knows he truly is, giving her hope and making her heart flutter.
After circumstances with their family change and an ocean comes between Lily and Christopher, the soul mates are finally able to act on their love.
Soon, Lily learns why Donovan changed and what kept them apart. The challenges have left Donovan fragile and damaged. Lily will do anything to help and try to fix him.
I won't give away the ending but let's say you'll definitely want to follow up with the sequel "Times Forbidden Flower."
Obviously, this book touches upon a taboo subject and may not be for everyone. It dares to ask the question of the laws of love. Years ago the subject of homosexuality and interracial love was considered taboo but today are commonplace.
I, personally, loved this series. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading a good page turner, especially if you enjoy an "outside the box" subject.
