Keven Mark Smith, an attorney, gives advice about marriage in his postscript, and if you read nothing else, I recommend the postscript. Valuable information appears in this section: the legal process of divorce, aftermath of the break up, the financial ruin, and the effect on children--to name a few of the helpful tidbits in this segment. When a couple thinks of ending a marriage, this last addition by the author makes one pause for thought before tearing the family apart. Although the Bible gives adultery as a reason for divorce, forgiveness for the unfaithfulness is the better valor. However, in the case of extreme abuse, not all stories have a happy ending or unusual twists to solve the issues. A spouse can forgive a corporeal battering, but when bruises continue, it is my personal belief it is time for separation--and possibly divorce--for safety's sake.
Max and Evelyn’s marriage was on the rocks two weeks after their wedding date. Married young, and without family support, the couple were on a fast tracked road to destruction with Max’s drinking and Evelyn’s desire to keep peace and keep her children safe. Until the final event when Max Jr., now a teenager, intervenes.
Evelyn and the children go to a family shelter and Max plunges himself deeper into drinking and womanizing, but through an interesting turn of events their lives begin to change. There are no coincidences with God and with His strong shelter, Max and Evelyn become the people they were intended to be.
I applaud Mr. Smith for taking a stand for what he believes; it isn’t always easy in the no fault society we have built for ourselves. The book was expertly written and well laid out into thought provoking read.
In this story, the final straw for Evelyn occurs when her husband threatens their oldest son when he steps In to rescue her from another beating. After the hospital staff treat her bruises, she seeks shelter, and legal advice. The lawyer who accepts her probono is a Christian undergoing some health issues of his own. As the story progresses, questions arise from other sources that give the main characters food for thought, including the abusive husband.
This book is a quick read because it's characters are compelling and the plot thoughts provoking. What should she do with the rest of her life and how should she react to the attraction she feels for her lawyer? Read on to discover God's answers to some of life's most relevant issues.
