It arrived a week before my current litter, and so I plugged it in straight away in order to give it a test run while awaiting the litter. I use a medium firm whelping box foam pad (encased in vinyl) to protect puppies, e.g., from any accidental misstep by the dam. I cut a hole in the foam and sunk the nest into it and then threw a whelping pad over the foam pad as per normal. I was worried as to whether the whelping nest might emit heat from the sides which in turn might somehow affect the foam or the vinyl. No such problem at all. No noxious fumes of any sort (another concern I had), and the nest maintains a very stable and reliable temperature. I checked it regularly at first, and found it consistently self-regulated. I am still checking it (although less frequently now that I am growing to trust it), and it has yet to disappoint me. Of course, the puppies themselves also constantly show me their happiness with it by remaining on it freely rather than scattering about elsewhere in the box.
The whelping nest has two cords, both of which are very sturdy (which also pleases me). They are akin to good quality commercial extension cords. One cord is the power cord that runs to the electrical outlet, the other has a small box on its end that contains a very small red light which confirms the unit is functioning properly. You can position this little box outside of the whelping box at whatever height you choose. I set mine at a height that allows me, at a glance, from any place in the room, to check the red light is illuminated and thereby confirm the pad is on and working. I like having that peace of mind with just a quick glance.
All in all, this is proving to be a very good purchase. My dam is much more comfortable (no glaring light overheating her), the puppies instantly seemed to take to it and whenever she is out of the box they gravitate to it while awaiting her return. This litter of eight Goldens fits very comfortably in it, and I anticipate they will continue to do so (despite a rapid growth rate) until the point where they are able to regulate their own body temperature. FWIW, I also notice my dam is tending to rest with her front pads comfortably positioned inside the nest. I am guessing she is enjoying the moderate warmth as well?
The installation instructions were easy to follow, and the thermostat worked just as advertised.
