"Anyone in a cross-cultural relationship will love this book. On almost every page is a scenario you will recognise, be it a tale of Kafkaesque paperwork or a comical failure to communicate with future in-laws.... Call it serendipity, call it fate, call it what you like. But if there's a theme to this delightful book it is that some things are just meant to be." Craig Turp, Bucharest Life

What I found interesting was that no matter where you come from, people are all the same, even more, men seem to have the same "faults", women too, I suppose.
The book takes us to all these different countries and continents, it's a nice collection of international stories, it teaches us about customs, and the way people live and think. It also shows us how some families have the strength and the curiosity to live in all these places, to grow and to learn from such a vast experience.
We all live our own little life/ love story, this book brings the world together into a cute atlas of love, challenge and cultural diversity.
Having been in a relationship with an "alien" herself for the past more than 20 years, the author goes deep into asking other women questions that reveal intimate stories about family dynamics in a couple where partners come from different parts of the world.
You will laugh, you might shed a tear, you will find out about the compromises people do to accommodate each other, you will relive along them the story of their love and you will enjoy first seats in the microscopic view of love life in a global society.
And even after you have finished reading the whole book, you might go back to it to revisit favorite stories.
- I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review. -
Unlike that story from my past, stories in Loving an alien do show how love (and humor!) conquer all. And if love and humor are not enough, there is always food. There is a great collection of recipes accompanying the stories, and I cannot wait to try them out.
But, after I started reading, I could hardly stop. Well, I did make a small pause from time to time to think over what I was reading. It was like: Wow, I've traveled to this or that country and made friends there but it never occurred to me that some people might feel that way! Now I'm afraid I misunderstood some of the people I met. I used to think that if somebody was reserved or not so enthusiastic about me it meant that he didn't like me too much. Hmmm!
Now, even if you are not planning to fall for a foreigner, this book is worth reading for its sincerity. There are true love stories, real women and real men, different in some ways, similar in others. And the best thing is they all have happy endings!
Besides, this book is a very intimate "travel guide", one you won't find at the reception desk of your hotel. And a tasty guide, too, thanks to the traditional receipts at the end of each story!
The only thing missing is maybe the "aliens"'opinion.
