Editorial Reviews

Review

Thank you Mrs. Allard for a wonderful journey. I will miss James, Sarah, and Geoffrey and wish with all my heart to see their story continue.

~Danielle Estes

Although this is fiction, you can almost believe that this is a real life adventure. After reading the first 2 books of this trilogy, the characters feel like close friends and you worry about what will happen next with them next.

~Jean F. Lasocki

I don't want to write a poor review for this book because I loved the series so much but, unfortunately, this was the most disappointing book out of the group. It was an easy read and I was hooked because I wanted to know what was going to happen with the characters. Unfortunately, I felt like I waited so long for this finale and then it was a bit of a let down. It lacked a certain something that the other books had. I think there was far too much flashing back to the World War camps and it felt as if you spent more time in the past than the present. I found myself skipping those parts to get to the good stuff almost every time. Overall, I'm glad to have finally gotten to read the conclusion and it ended well but I wish the story had been better.

While I LOVED the first 2 of her books, this one never grabbed me. I found myself skimming to get to the information. The long letters that Jamie wrote to Sarah just seemed to run on and on. For me, the book did not flow the way the first two did. It felt over thought rather gripping and naturally flowing. I am glad at how it ended even if it was predictable, it seemed the only way James and Sarah's story could and should end. Very sorry to say it was not my favorite.

Today's review is on Her Loving Husband's Return by Meredith Allard

To start off, let me say that I had fallen in love, love, love with this series back in April of 2011 when the first book came out. From page one to page 290 I was captivated by the struggle, strength, and love of the two main characters James and Elizabeth Wentworth. Of course being that I am from Massachusetts may have played a small part, and let's face it, those school field trips to Salem were way more interesting and exciting than the ones to Plymouth Plantation.

I couldn't wait for the next installment, and when the second book in the series came out in April of 2012 I dropped everything and dove into it. Low and behold, I was again enthralled with the Wentworth's continuing story. I loved how Allard incorporated Elizabeth's unborn child into the mix as well as the Native American aspect.

Waiting on pins and needles for the final book, I jumped at the chance to review Her Loving Husband's Return. Well, I'm not jumping so much any more. You see, this installment was more like a History lesson than what I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, being married to a Japanese American I both enjoyed and learned from the story, but that's just it, I LEARNED.

At the end of Her Loving Husband's Curse, James voluntarily goes to the detainment camp for vampires. A detainment camp that was actually used 70 years earlier for the Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. And while there, James begins writing to his beloved telling her about the time he spent at Manzanar with the Japanese citizens that were interned there all those years ago. And that takes up a huge part of the 300+ pages.

Through it all though James and Elizabeth; now Sarah, struggle with being apart.

Her Loving Husband's Return is the final book of Meredith Allard's Loving Husband Trilogy, and it is a lovely and satisfying conclusion!

In her previous books, Allard drew parallels between events in the story and some of American history's more infamous moments. In Her Loving Husband's Return, she draws on the forced evacuation of Japanese-Americans to internment camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, as James and hundreds of other vampires, now the objects of fear and paranoia, are sent to an internment camp as well. With him are Geoffrey, Timothy, Chandresh and Jocelyn. Camp Dracula, as it is nicknamed, happens to be located at almost the exact same location as the 1940's camp Manzanar.

While stuck at the camp with not a lot to do, James keeps himself occupied with writing long letters to Sarah, telling her of some of his past adventures. It is through these letters that we, as well as Sarah, get an idea of how many lives James has affected in his long life, and how many people he has helped. One of the underlying themes here is the notion that help will come to those who have helped others, and if James wants to get back to Sarah and baby Grace, he's going to need all the help he can get.

Ever since the first book, Her Dear and Loving Husband, came out, I've been rooting for these wonderful characters to win out despite difficult circumstances and impossible odds, and I'm so glad to see them finally achieve the peace and happiness they've been reaching for for so long!

I loved this trilogy. This is not normally the kind of book I would read but I read the first one, then had to get the second. I could not wait for the third. These books provide a lot of history, romance and treat the vampires like humans showing their struggles living in a human world. Don't let the "vampire" story line keep you from reading. They are very interesting books and keep you wanting more.

I say bitter sweet because I know this was the last book in the trilogy but it was awesome! Meredith gave me everything I wanted in this book. There's even a big surprise, which totally caught me off guard, but now, thinking back over the first 2 books, I can see hints she gave. if you loved her first two books in the Loving Husband trilogy then you must read this last one.
