Beware: Kidnapping, Torture, and Non-Con.
This book. This series put me through the wringer. There were things that pissed me off to no end, but the ending, that final moment-breakthrough that made this a 5 Star read.
Home is where the heart is. What if you can't find your heart until it's been completely shredded. Your soul broken. Poppet pulled out her dark side with this one. I had tears of happy, sad, and frustration. This series is a rollercoaster of emotional baggage, a journey of self discovery.
This freaking series. UGH. ARGH. Yep, I just went pirate on you. Where do I begin. Holly has switched partners like I change my underwear. My head was spinning. The thing of it is, there's the three, the same three from the beginning. Sean. Jared. Deacon. There's a pull to each and every one of them, but it never felt like it should. I guess I felt like Holly did, something was missing, I never felt like she was truly happy. Which made it easier to see her switching one for the other. One guy had something different to offer. Jared, he's immature, reckless, the quintessential bad boy, rock star. I was always rooting for him, because I couldn't not, he was so darkly passionate. Deacon, the best friend, sometimes the friends with benefits, the teacher, the safe guy.
Sean. Sean. Sean. I still don't know how I feel about him, I mean, he's a Dom. Then he's not. He's controlling, confused, and completely obsessed with Holly. (Which is why I wanted him so bad.)
MY HEAD WAS SPINNING!!!!
In the end. I was Team Holly. But I still feel unsettled, I'm crying on the inside and I can't tell you why. (Spoilers) Revenge leaves Holly broken. It's takes her from girl to woman. It made her see what she had always been missing. I had goosebumps and tears running down my face.
If you like some darkness, edge, and a whole lot of angst with your romance, look no further.
This series explores the nature of fear, the limits of survival and the promise of redemption. It looks at doing bad and being bad, at the consequences of corruption and the dislocations along the fault lines of history and unrealized hopes. The intensity, the brutality, the cold hard edges of sanity tripping over revenge... No one does horror quite like Gemma Rice, personalizing it until it eats at the reader's flesh, flaying away all semblance of normal and dousing you in a cauldron of pain insatiably sensual.
I love this series, I adore this final episode. Not for its denouement which all along I hoped for... no, demanded... but for the journey of pain and absolution, the revelations of those inner sanctums that reveal the nature of trust, and of love. Complex, emotionally challenging and often draining, Loving Villains is one heck of a ride.
I give it my highest recommendation.
