Killer in every regard.

Gregg didn't make this album to fill it with "hits". And even though there are only a couple of newly written songs on the album, it isn't even a traditional album of covers. What it is is Gregg Allman delivering the blues, using his past to push this album into the fore. These are blues so thick you have to wade through them. You can feel it the instant the album starts, the air gets thick and heavy, there seems to be smoke wafting in the air, the voice doesn't seem to have a hint of falsetto and the songs evoke an imagery that is easy to relate to. Gregg has always been known for the blues, but this is the "mo' betta'" version from way down in the back country where only the locals go.

This is by far one of the best recordings that Gregg has ever done. When asked to assess his work Gregg speaks about the album "coming from the heart" and when you listen to this, you know he's right.

I suggest that you click on the Amazon link and grab yourself a copy. An' when da' mailman come, prepare to haf a serious case o' dem ol' blues.

Keepiin it real

I kinda hate the "intellectual" critiques of this CD.
Blues, and especially Gregg Allman are something you FEEL. It's not in the brain, it's in the very cells of your body.
Someone else ( bronco) said, listening to Gregg sing--"it hurts so GOOD"
I listen to this ENTIRE Low Country CD very very often--have my favorites, like Checkin up on my Baby, and Just another Rider But it is ALL great. I also have ALL his body of work and Gregg NEVER put out anything that didn't come from deep in his soul.
I don't know how anyone could ever have heard the Allman Brothers band and NOT have recognized that HE is the band. There's a world of great drummers and guitarists out there---not to take anything away from the Brothers, because that band was TIGHT. They finished each other's sentences, musically speaking. But without that VOICE it would have been just another great "Southern Rock Band", as they were labeled.(they were always SO much more than that!) I have NEVER forgotten being at a concert and the ABB was smokin!!!It was almost exhausting. Then with these screaming guitars playing at the speed of light, SUDDENLY the lights went blue,leaving one single guitar note laying on the air,it's scream fading away--at the last moment he bent a string and Gregg came in singing YEAH YEAH YEAH, as they went into Not My Croos to Bear. WHAT an emotional experience that was. The whole arena was riveted by his voice. So dont analyze him, just FEEL him. Pray for him and love him. He is a gift.

At first I didn't get it...

I ordered this CD when it first came out and popped it the player in my car. I had gotten back into a lot of Allman Brothers music as part of a jam band period (that I'm still in). I was ready for some up-tempo ABB-like stuff and this just was NOT it. So, back in a pile it went.

But for something different last weekend I played a House of Blues collection of Chicago Blues and it really hit a chord (as this music always does when I'm ready for it). So then, back this goes in the player and "wow." Gregg Allman still has a lot of power in his delivery, and this is a very tasteful, respectful take on some real blues material - some of it familiar and a lot of it not as much.

But so well done...and so worth a good listen.

Incredible album for 2011

I was flipping through an issue of Rolling Stone (in late 2010)to find on the "In the Studio" column story of Gregg Allman and T-Bone Burnett making an album together. I didn't even read the article. I've been a fan of the Allman Brothers for years now and I've been a fan of T-Bone Burnett's production style since he did the soundtracks for "O Brother Where Art Thou?" and "Walk the Line" and his earthy production for the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss collaboration "Raising Sand".
I don't know what I was expecting. I know Gregg has got to be one of the greatest white blues singers....and I had forgotten that too. What gets me about this album is the production that T-Bone Burnett brings to this project. T-Bone takes these albums that are made in this century and makes them sound like they were made in the 1930's or 40's. I listen to these blues covers and I think that finally someone has done this right. Many blues artists and mainstream artists schooled in the blues try hard to make a blues album. But, somehow they fall short. I listen to the sparseness of Floating Bridge and Devil Got My Woman and I thought this was a Robert Johnson type of recording. I'm a big fan of Eric Clapton and I think his blues albums are fantastic. But, I really wanted his Me & Mr Johnson album to be much more earthy like this album. T-Bone Burnett recently produced another collaboration with Elton John and Leon Russell called The Union. So, I propose to Mr. Clapton to seek out Gregg Allman and T-Bone Burnett and make a truly great blues album. This just seems like the perfect pairing since Eric and Gregg's big brother Duane recorded Clapton's Derek and the Dominos Layla.
I am really excited that a new release in 2011 has me pumped up for new music. This is not a sterile studio album. It is an album that breathes the blues. To add to how great it is, Gregg (and T-Bone) has Dr John, Doyle Bramhall II, Warren Haynes and the rhythm section of bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose(from the Plant/Krauss' Raising Sand) playing on this album.
It's not often that I feel the need to sit down, talk and write about an album I'm enthusiastic about. But, this is one of them. If you love a GREAT blues album with great musicians, I highly recommend this one. If you love Gregg Allman's vocals....If you love the production work of T-Bone Burnett....and if love great music, Trust me on this one! You'll love it!

Such a awesome sound from Gregg and his great band assembled for the CD. I would highly reccomend it to someones who loves the blues. And these songs have such a great vibe. The production value is excellent. T-Bone Burnett does it again with Gregg Allman!
