Vibram Outsole
The Renegade's nubuck leather upper securely holds the foot in place, reducing strain on the toes during downhill sections. Its Monowrap midsole technology reduces overall boot weight, while providing extra cushioning and lateral stability. A rugged Vibram outsole and thick, nonslip rubber lugs make these boots ideal for hiking, light backpacking, and other outdoor activities where you need traction and grip. This shoe is built on gender-specific, men's and women's lasts, for optimal fit and comfort.
Climate-Control Footbed Wicks Away Moisture
The Renegade boot features a climate-control footbed which keeps your feet cool, dry, and blister free. Perforations in the boot's lining allow air to circulate and wick moisture away from your foot, minimizing friction and fatigue.
Waterproof GORE-TEX Keeps Feet Dry
Renegade boots with the GTX designation--including the Renegade II GTX LO and Renegade GTX Mid--feature breathable, waterproof GORE-TEX lining that reduces hot spots so your feet stay comfortable in warmer temperatures as well as cold, wet conditions. Renegade boots with the LL designation feature buttery-soft glove leather lining that molds to the contours of your feet for exceptional comfort.
Stabilizing Shanks and Derby-Style Lacing
These hiking boots feature a full-length nylon shank for extra stability on rugged terrain. Also, the derby-style lacing on the Renegade Mid boots ensures a customized fit for a wide variety of feet.

Just took these on a two week Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal. Overall, they did great across a variety of terrain. However:
1. I did get two blisters on my right foot -- not bad for 2 wks of trekking.
2. Water proofing was fine for stream crossings and light rain. But we unexpectedly got a foot+ of snow before crossing a high mountain pass -- after ~6-7 hours walking through snow, the waterproofing finally gave in. Wet feet in <30 degree weather was not fun.
3. The sole is flexible. I was only carrying about a 15 lb pack, but at the end of certain days on rock/scree, my feet felt tired.
Had I realized how much scree and snow we'd be on, I'd have worn the Tibets or a heavy dutier boot. Still, the Renegades held up really well and I can only recommend them.
____________
Fairly light weight, with good ankle support. Breathable and yet still feel pretty rugged. I got them this summer and had been looking for a lightweight summer day hiker. While these are not as light or breathable as the Vasque Breeze and Merrill Moab, I found that they felt much more durable, comfortable, supportive and roomy in the toe box.
Very comfortable out of the box with no breaking in required for 6 mile day hike. They have done well since on day hikes and scrambles ranging from 5-15 miles with no hotspots, blisters or foot/ankle pain.
As for fit: I wear a 5.5 M in street shoes/heels and typically wear a 6 M in true to size hiking boots with a thick pair of wool Wigwam socks. I like a roomy toe box and was surprised that the 6 felt a little snug around the toes and upper portion of my foot (my previous, ancient Lowas were a 6). I ended up going with the 6.5 M (size 37.5 european) and have been happy with the fit on my hikes.
As returns are free for footwear, I suggest ordering a few different sizes so that you can compare on the spot. Boot fit is really personal. I'd done a lot of research and the Vasque Breeze gets great reviews -- I was very surprised how uncomfortable they felt compared to the Renegades. The Ahnu's also get great reviews, but for me they were far too narrow and did not feel breathable. The Moab Mid's were too low, as I need good ankle support, and felt like more like a sneaker than a boot. All three felt sort of chintzy and not very durable. If deciding between boots, try to get to a store and try the various boots before ordering, or order all the boots in various sizes at once so that you can compare on the spot.
The Renegades have a semi flexible, somewhat sneaker-like sole. I have bad ankles and for big loads, I prefer stiffer ankle support and heavier soles -- I would not personally use these for multi-day backpacking with anything heavier than a 20 lb load. I have the Lowa Tibet for backpacking, and also had to go up to 6.5 / 37.5 in those. Interestingly, the Tibet feels slightly larger than the Renegade (perhaps because the boot is stiffer and has less give?). As I plan to use these for a long distance backpack where my feet will swell, I decided the roomier fit would be fine.
I experimented with Superfeet Insoles to compensate for the difference, but found the Montrail Enduro Sole much more comfortable.
I'm very pleased with the Renegades. I've owned Lowa's in the past and find them to be very comfortable and durable. These have not disappointed.
Renegade is Lowa's most popular and hardest working hiking boots. Let's face it, most people are not doing long-mileage days bushwacking with a heavy pack strapped on. For most people the most they'd do is to hike for 5 hours (with a 2 hr break) with less than 10lb on. If they do it once a month that's considered often.
Thus the demand and appreciation for this model is high. They are built for your typical occasional day hikers in mind. The built and support are more than enough for them. It is also a good pair of work boots if your working environment demands such footwear.
After Vasque Wasatch gave me 4 hot spots on a 12-mile day hike up to Mt. Baldy (yeah, testing new boots doing 6000' gain and loss in one day, very smart of me) and 2 hot spots after another 14-mile backpacking day gaining and lossing 4000' with 20lb on (gotta give it a second chance, right?), I returned the Wasatch and bought Lowa Renegade instead.
I tried them for an over-nighter carrying 25lb and covered about 7 miles total in a day with very moderate elevation gain and loss, I was sold on Renegade. They did the job beautifully, never made me feel like wearing ski boots or not having enough ankle/foot support and sole flexibility.
However, I can imagine if I'd up the mileage, elevation gain/loss, and backpack weight, I would need something more heavy duty (I bought a pair of Lowa Vivione on Amazon). However, since I don't backpack all the time (who does??), for intermediate/advance level day hikes in the Sierra, Renegade is a perfect pair of boots.
Lowa makes several models in wide and narrow width besides the usual med width. Make sure you order your boots in the right width.
