The obsessiveness of these pieces becomes a sort of meta joke -- they're serious, but the depth of that seriousness becomes funny.
Unfortunately, about half the material in the book is original comedy, rather than analysis of others' comedy, and very little of this is worthwhile. Descriptions of fake silent movie stars, fake college alumni letters, fake law firm memos. Take out some of the more explicit sexual references and any of these would have fit in the lame humor magazine published at my high school, years ago.
I give 4.5 stars for the reviews and analytical pieces, 1.5 stars for the original humor, so 3 stars overall.
