Editorial Reviews

Review

"Is there anything more enticing than curling up with a thrilling whodunit that keeps you guessing until the very end? Susan Boyer delivers big time with a witty mystery that is fun, radiant, and impossible to put down. I LOVE THIS BOOK!" --Darynda Jones, New York Times Bestselling Author

"Lowcountry Bombshell is that rare combination of suspense, humor, seduction, and mayhem, an absolute must-read not only for mystery enthusiasts but for anyone who loves a fast-paced, well-written story!" --Cassandra King, Author of The Same Sweet Girls and Moonrise, inspired by Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca

From the Author

Lowcountry Bombshell was such fun for me to write! It tells the story of my tech-savvy, Sig-toting, Kate-Spade-loving, Southern Private Investigator, Liz Talbot's, next case. I see Liz's continuing story as traditional PI mysteries, but also as contemporary romance novels, with the romance storyline playing out over the course of the series. While Lowcountry Bombshell contains many cozy elements--small town setting, family interaction, humor, etc.--it also contains elements one might not typically expect to find in cozy mysteries. Y'all, there is sex between consenting adults in this book. While these scenes are not what I personally would consider explicit, some readers may find them so. The very last thing I would ever want to do is offend a reader. So, I thought I should mention that Liz's love life plays a bigger role in this book than it did in Lowcountry Boil, the first book in the series.

Susan Boyer's first Liz Talbot mystery, Lowcountry Boil, won an Agatha Award for Best First Book. Lowcountry Bombshell is even better, surely a contender for more awards. Liz is back, this time protecting a woman who is a dead ringer for Marilyn Monroe. The job leads to some quirky characters and wild adventures, all wrapped up in a terrific read. You don't have to read Lowcountry Boil first--but why pass it up? I'll be looking forward to the next one.

The story gets curious from the beginning when Liz gets to know her new client - a doppelganger of Marilyn Monroe - wealthy Callista, who is certain that someone is going to kill her on the day of the famous star's death. That promised enough a story and that promise was fulfilled with gang of interesting characters and satisfying amount of action. The only thing that bored to me death were waaay to lengthy descriptions of Liz's sex with Nate. It was worthy a Harlequin magenta series, not a cozy mystery. And to be honest - I skipped them, being shocked how much I needed to scroll to be over with it. If not that - I would have given 4 stars for satisfying continuation of the series.

Susan Boyer has done it again with her second book in the Liz Talbot sleuth series. If Agatha Christie has ever been reincarnated it would be in Susan Boyer's body. Not only does she have Agatha's great gift of making up new characters, like the quirky Marilyn, but the plot is convoluted and tricky as well. The romance between Nate and Liz is steamy. The ghost is fun and helpful, while the hand sanitizer jokes are funny. Our heroine grows in the story by making her own decisions in life, even though the men in it do not approve; her dad, brother, beau, uncle and Ex. What our heroine is forced to do at the end of the story defines her, making her a stronger woman. This book is sure to earn Susan Boyer another Agatha award. I look forward to reading her third book

South Carolina is my favorite vacation destination. I was delighted to find this series of books. The author's references were heartwarming, and brought to mind memories of people and places I've visited while traveling through that area. I was completely immersed in the setting.

The story itself was engaging. I love a good mystery. I love Marilyn Monroe. Using real facts regarding the mystery surrounding the starlet's death really helped to enhance the other elements of the plot. It helped to hold my attention, and kept me glued to page after page until the culprit was revealed.

The author mentions that unlike the first book, this one contains sex. I'm not a fan of sex scenes in books. Due to how much I enjoyed the first book, I threw caution to the wind and decided to read it anyway. Compared to some other books, which were completely off-putting, these scenes were tame. I was pretty relieved at that!

I have to say, the end was a total surprise. I won't spoil it, but I never saw the twist and was delighted in being surprised. If you enjoy a good mystery, the laid back lifestyle of the South, and Marilyn Monroe, then you will love this book.

Just finished both these books. First LOW COUNTRY BOIL was such a good read. Liz Talbot as a P.I. was very entertaining. She took her job very seriously, had a brother who was Chief of Police in her hometown, a family that at times stressed the others out, and this was topped with an old love interest and a mystery to solve. Secondly LOW COUNTRY BOMBSHELL had all the same ingredients mixed with many of the same family and hometown characters, and of course a great mystery to solve..

I was not familiar with author Susan Boyer. LOW COUNTRY BOIL was her first release, and after reading the premise of the story and the reviews written, decided it was a book that sounded like it would be a good read and fun. Well, the reviewers were right on target. I think I experienced all the emotions of pleasure, happiness, sadness, anticipation to find out "who done it", and lots of laughter over an extremely funny book.

What surprised me was that after enjoying it so much, l went right back to get her second release LOW COUNTRY BOMBSHELL and finished it in less than a day. I agree with the reviewers that said they thought the second was even better than the first. Now I just hope that her next release will be coming through very soon because I'm looking forward to more books in the Liz Talbot Mystery Series. My suggestion to other readers is do yourself a favour -- get these books in sequence, find a quiet spot and be prepared to be entertained.

When vacationing near Charleston, SC, I always try to read a book that takes place in the South Carolina low country. Lowcountry Bombshell by Susan B. Moyer is the second novel in her Liz Talbot mystery series. I thought that Lowcountry Bombshell would be a light read (think Janet Evanovich) but I was pleasantly surprised to discover a novel with a well-developed plot, fleshed-out characters and good writing. There was also a lot of fun to be had.

Liz Talbot is a private investigator who lives on the island of Stella Maris, near Charleston, SC. Taylor is hired by Calista McQueen, a beautiful woman who is a dead-ringer for the bombshell actress, Marilyn Monroe. Her life has paralleled the famous actress in so many ways that it is uncanny. McQueen is now getting threats and believes that someone is going to kill her on the anniversary of Monroe’s death—less than a week away. At first, most people think that McQueen is exaggerating including Blake Talbot, Liz’s police chief-brother. But then Liz’s life is threatened as well and things are looking more serious. And as if Liz doesn’t have enough on her plate, she is dealing with complications in her love life. Her current boyfriend/ partner does not want to relocate to Stella Maris, and her former boyfriend is actively pursuing her. It makes for some tense moments.

Lowcountry Bombshell was an enjoyable read for a vacation. Ok—McQueen’s family was a little over the top. And you have to buy into the fact that Liz’s dead friend from her teenage-years has reappeared and become her “guardian spirit.” Also, I could have done without the very detailed sex scenes. Still, I am hooked on this series and immediately started book one, Lowcountry Boil. My one recommendation is to read these books in order. The changes in Liz’s personal life will make more sense.
