The Lowel GL-1 Power LED Kit makes a compact battery powered LED light that's ideal for the wedding, event, location portrait and architectural photographer. It includes Lowel GL-1 Power LED unit, Battery, Battery Charger, AC adapter and a Hard Case Foam Insert.Power, Portabiity & Performance. It has a very bright output, with spot to flood focusing. It's dimmable, with a highly accurate tungsten color output that doesnt shift during dimming. Its self-contained quick-swap rechargable battery frees you up to move quickly, keeping up with the pace of the event. What makes the GL-1 such a great tool is that you can see exactly what the light is doing. A constant, dimmable, focusable light source with no wires attached! The portability allows us to capture multiples images we would never have had the time for. Moving freely around a location without worrying about big umbrellas or wires was such a relief. The GL-1 simply gives us the freedom to create.Your high ISO D- SLR allows you to shoot in lower light situations. The GL-1 lets you add just the right amount of key, fill, or accent light on your subject, helping them stand out in the shot. Its powerful output and focusing ability mean you can easily add light exactly where you need it from a greater distance,so it's perfect for wider shots.

The problem is, it just does not feel like a professional piece of kit. The plastic battery enclosure is badly designed, I have to tape it to stop the battery popping out. I leave it on its side when I'm not using it because its top heavy and can fall over and break if you don't place it upright carefully.
Doesn't fit snugly into a camera bag and for its size you would expect more power. I'm confused as to why there is nothing else on the market to compare this too? Maybe thats why its so expensive....Its great for video too, the light is soft enough to light a person with no diffusion.
Needs an upgrade: more power, better build, longer battery life, and weather proofing. Now that would be worth the price tag.
The ice light can only go 5 feet then it's useless .the Lowel GL1 is not cheap because it will do everything you want in a LED .Save up your money ,this product will last you a life time.
It's shaped like a power drill, so one would imagine it borrows functional details like a locking battery with a charging dock. Alas, it has neither of these. The only thing holding the battery in are two little clips and friction. Any slight movement or shake will loosen the battery to the point where it loses its connection or it will simply slide right out. I would hope that for $700, the build quality would be rock solid. Unfortunately, it isn't so. I wish there was a competitor that makes an equivalent product with better build quality, but currently, this isn't so. Lowel fills a much needed gap in lighting options, and they should truly step up their quality control and their design. Also, with the improvement in LED technology, there is no reason this light needs to be so honking huge. The design makes it difficult to mount on a light stand or incorporate it with any booms or adapters. The 1/4-20 thread on the bottom doesn't instill much confidence, especially seeing how poorly the battery is constructed. I would not trust this mounted high on a stand. If you must have this light, be sure to tape that battery door shut. This is a common complaint for this light and I just don't understand why after all these years of manufacturing, the design has not been corrected. There is no excuse for bad quality control at this price point.
The light has decent quality, even though parts of it feel pretty plasticky. But I am actually ok with it because that cuts down the weight. This light looks like a power drill, but it weighs nothing like one. Unlike other reviews, this light is actually very light for us. The heaviest bit is always going to be the battery. But given we constantly have a couple of nikon D4 on our bodies with pro lenses, this light is very light in comparison. It's very easy to use, and we find it very convenient in weddings when we are short of time and run out of people or just couldnt go run and setup the flashes with triggers and lightstands right away. There are a few times when the venue dim the lights to total darkness and when we felt helpless with the D4 even at 6400 ISO, we immediately have the assistant take it out and spot it on the couple right away. We are very pleased with the dramatic spot effect this light produces. Overall, this light is a great addition to our lighting setups. Will we rely on it all the time? Probably not, but when we need it it serves great purpose.
And Lowel / Tiffen is definitely a company that stands behind their product. I have a question/issue with the charger, and after a few emails they sent out another one right away. Very good customer service and
The thing you might want to look out for is the heavy battery is clipped into place onto the hotlight by plastic, so I imagine overtime it's going to give. At that point in time, you probably want to tape it or velcro it to prevent the battery from flying out. For that reason, I have a bag for the light rather than hanging it on my belt like a power tool. Another thing is the clear lens cover on the front of the light is plastic, and scratches easily. It also has tiny grooves that traps dust, not sure why it's designed that way. But since this is not a lens it probably shouldnt bother anyone. It takes a 82mm filter which you can get in a different color to balance out the tungsten, but I dont use that at all because this light is too weak for daylight usage. In the day you are probably better off with reflectors, flashes or softboxes etc. This light really shines at night, no pun intended. When the light is powered on, you can hear the cooling fan at the back of the light to keep the unit cool. The sound is very faint, but you can hear it, probably not going to be an issue at the ceremony. In dark places, this light can get glare-y so please inform the couple ahead of time that you are going to spot them. You also have the ability to lock the light and its power output, so you can leave it on a table without assistant. It also has tripod mounting at the base, so you can put it on tripod or lightstand, which can be handy at times (it comes with AC power so you can plug it and put it on a lightstand as long as the plug is close enough). A few times I left it in places to spot the couple while I shoot, while my assistant is busy so that worked out pretty well. The power adjustment dial knob is really cheap feeling though, it just spins around really freely without any locks, another downside of this light.
Yep so you are paying for an innovative product that has features that work awesome for event photographers, and the good customer service will give you a peace of mind. I have yet to use it long enough to know how well the battery will retain its juice, so we will see.
