Although it is a bit larger than I expected, I am now thankful that I bought the larger 300 model. Surprisingly it carries a lot more than I expected it would. I carry one pro-DSLR, a 70-200 2.8 lens, a 2.0 TC, and 2 fixed lenses; as well as a flash and a 'pile' of filters and other miscellaneous things. What amazes me almost as much as how much I can carry with me now, is how comfortable it feels on my back -- with the sternum and waist strap snug, it rests comfortably on my hips which takes all the weight off my shoulders. I could walk as far as my feet allow with no discomfort on my shoulders or back, whatsoever. The shoulder straps are very well designed as is the bag itself -- there are no hard surfaces or anything that would cause any chafing. Also, I should note, I am not young, strong, nor tall -- yet, it is very comfortable.
I like the zippered compartment inside the bag -- perfect for filters in their cases -- and a pair of reading glasses to view the display screen. :-) I like the shape of the bag; 'flipped up', it makes a perfect place to set your equipment on when outdoors, as opposed to 'on the ground'. The outside zippered component is a bit narrow, but it is perfect for a cell phone and your memory cards, but not much more. I especially like the very sturdy, well-designed 'handle' -- this allows you to pick up the bag when you just have to go a short distance.
Minor cons: I would not expect the tripod holder to carry anything heavier than a very light-weight tripod. I prefer an Op/Tech tripod strap anyway (it really does 'lighten the load'!), so that was not a consideration when I bought it. The zipper could be a 'half-inch' longer -- but I compensate by putting those things that I am less likely to need in that area -- but even that is not a major inconvenience. So far, I have taken it on several long day-hikes and found myself thinking, why didn't I buy one of these years ago! It really is a 'must have tool' for the outdoor photographer who likes to carry 'everything but the kitchen sink' with them -- just in case!
AF-S VR lens among other beasts, I kid you not weigh about 60 pounds when loaded. Not exactly point & shoot standards, and it is truly exhausting work at times.
So, when I had the opportunity last year to send off a few of my DSLR bodies back to Nikon's NPS for servicing & cleaning,
I opted for a clean start. I wanted a scaled down pack, that would offer more security & simplicity. The Flipside 300 did this and more. The pack is extremely tough and well-designed. Lowepro understands that you cannot please everyone all of the time and it focuses solely on its mission - provide a rugged, secure, comfortable, cost-effective backpack for the amateur and semi-pro arena of shooters.
The Flipside 300 has enough room for the following:
-Nikon D3X
-Tamron 17-50 VC f/2.8
-Nikon 50mm f/1.4
-Sigma 120-300 f/2.8
-Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 OS
-Nikon MH-21 charger w/extra battery.
-Epson P-5000 photo viewer & storage device.
-Lowepro PixelPak V2 Memory Case
-Western Digital 1TB Passport Drive
-Lens Pen, Cleaning cloth, Rocket Blaster & small set of filters.
-2 Pens & Hiking book and/or small trail maps.
-Oregon 300 GPS strapped to outside.
-Gerber LMF II Infantry knife strapped to outside. (my non-TSA airport loading of course!)
-3 sets of Black Diamond Quickdraws. (external biners)
-No flash, no tripod!
So I guess you could say, I have my Flipside loaded down, but to me --- this is lightweight & easily managed.
Overall Pro's:
-Rugged & Comfortable.
-Provides additional security with rear-faced zipped compartments.
-Excellent amount of storage for the compact profile.
-Smooth, steady zippers that never get stuck.
-Reasonable price & finally a choice of colors.
-Concealed tripod mount included.
-Fits well on Euro trains, buses, airplanes without problems.
Overall Con's:
-No room for even the smallest Netbook.
-No attached rain/sandstorm covers.
-Waist straps could be padded & wider.
Overall an excellent choice & one I would make again tomorrow without hesitation.
This is not your "huge, I am not a backpacker" pack that will hold your kids X-BOX and Cuisinart juice extractor
while taking pictures driving by in your mini-van. This is a focused tool for the adventurous photographer and will
reward you with its strength & simplicity.
A truly incredible backpack by Lowepro.
I started out buying a Tamrac messenger 7 thinking it would work - I only have three lens, the camera plus grip and the typically assorted misc. Unfortunately, as soon as it arrived it became obvious the Tamrac was not meant for a camera with grip attached. I fiddled with the inserts every way possible to no avail - the fit was bulky at best and left me fearful of an inadvertent breakage.
Trying to make it work I purchased a "fanny pack" to switch all the accessories to plus a couple of lens packs/case to provide extra cushion. While both were a good deal and provided the protection I needed the entire situation was gettting out of hand - too much to keep up with and difficult to access.
Finally, I decided to try out this Lowepro...great choice! It provides much more protection than the Tamrac bag, is easy to access, actually fits my camera - with grip, 3 lens (1 zoom, 2 prime) plus assorted misc. Easy to organize, easy to carry, easy to access and easy on the budget.
Wish I had bought this one first. Actually has a little room to grow if needed - or just enough space to put in a few extras without having to wrestle every time you access the camera or want to change a lens. All in all an excellent value!
