This unit has the BEST out of the box preloaded maps on it that I've seen to date. It even shows small community ponds. Overkill? Maybe, but who cares. It is really smooth as far as repositioning and zooming the map. It does have decent contour data in it, but if you are all about contour data then get Navionics+ to go with it.
It is wireless wi-fi and Bluetooth with a NMEA-2000 connectivity so you have options with NMEA devices (including some motors). I'm still trying to get an answer as to if you can link two units together. As of right now I don't believe so but a future software patch could probably fix that. It's user interface is the exact same as the latest HDS update, minus the radar, camera and all the other Ethernet device options.
The transducer is long, maybe 8 inches and somewhat thick like a tv remote with about 20 feet of cord. It's bigger but it beats an HDS with two transducers. The imaging is amazing, the new technology with CHIRP really makes a difference.
Learning Sidescan is kind of tricky, I'd recommend doctorsonar.com there's really great educational material there for sonar, down imaging and side imaging. Also YouTube has great tutorial videos.
Hope this helps and if I remember anything else I will try to update as it goes.
Just upped the stars to 5. The splice where the factory in-line fuse was spliced to the power cable was bad. Under load the power dropped way down, without the load it read 12.8 volts. Respliced the fuse holder and everything is fine now, unit starts up and is completely operational.
I assume a 9" model will come out before too long - if you can, I would wait. I couldn't because my old Lowrance LCX104c finally died last week.
Thanks to the other reviewer who informed that the Chirp function only works if sidescan is turned off.
I hope the advanced features and capabilities make the product worthwhile as I become more proficient with use, but the inaccuracy of the GPS/Insight Pro map is a real bummer.
