Product Description

Raitt,Bonnie ~ Luck Of The Draw

Amazon.com

As its title makes clear, the 1991 sequel to Bonnie Raitt's platinum breakthrough on Nick Of Time takes nothing for granted. Raitt had achieved sobriety, renewed commercial focus, and then the payday that the prior album yielded, but Luck Of The Draw mirrors an even fiercer determination to make music as if her life depended on it. Again teamed with producer Don Was, Raitt surpasses herself with her best album to date: her wonderfully lush, blues-rimmed voice and sinuous slide guitar wrap themselves around a dozen potent songs culled from a typically shrewd mix of writers including Paul Brady, John Hiatt, Bonnie Hayes, Shirley Eikhard, and Billy Vera, and Raitt herself turns in her most generous batch of originals yet. Sympathetic guests include Brady and Delbert McClinton on harmony vocals, Richard Thompson on guitar, and Heartbreaker Benmont Tench on organ, in a program including the sassy "Something to Talk About," the sultry "Slow Ride," a soaring "Not the Only One," and the heartbreaking "I Can't Make You Love Me." This isn't luck, it's artistry. --Sam Sutherland

"Something to Talk About" was a big enough hit that this album got the attention of people who weren't familiar with Bonnie Raitt. If you don't know who she is, listen to "I can't make you love me" which just gets to me every time I listen to it.
Raitt's voice has fascinating purrs, growls and soaring tones. Her guitar playing is outstanding and her style defies classification. For example if you like Country you'd probably like her, but if you hate Country music you'd also like her. Go figure.
Bonnie Raitt is one of the most talented singer/songwriter/guitarists ever and why she isn't a bigger mega-star than she is just amazes me. She was the headline performer at our college homecoming in 1970 and she is still going strong strong strong. If you don't have any of her albums, this one is a sure winner to start with. Not a bad song in the bunch.

Both Raitt's cds Luck of the Draw and Nick of Time are worth owning. Luck of the Draw is slightly better I think with a stronger sense of identity. Great songs here like: "I Can't Make You Love Me", "Something To Talk About", "Luck Of The Draw", "Not The Only One", "Papa Come Quick", "Come To Me", "Tangled And Dark" and "All At Once." The music on here is infused with hope and caution, and musically its nearly flawless. This is a must have for any rock collector.

Unless you absolutely cringe to even the slightest twang of a slide guitar, you will love this CD. I used to hate country music but received this CD when I forgot to return my Columbia House card one month. I opened it thinking it was something else and was stuck with it, so I gave it a listen. At the time, I listened primarily to 1980's hair metal bands and Top 40 music, and I hadn't even heard Bonnie Raitt's name before. But after 2 spins of this CD, I was hooked.
Bonnie's voice is powerful and rich. The songs are true to the heart and the soul. Need to relax? Listen to this. Need to feel better? Just listen. Want to feel sorry for yourself? Grab a beer and wallow in the Luck of the Draw.
I recommend this disc for anyone with a heartbeat. It will beat a little healthier after making a connection wtih Bonnie Raitt.

What can one say about Bonnie that has not already been said? She is an amazing writer, producer, and guitar player whose voice always touches you. Bonnie oozes pain and passion with each breath-sadness and strength with each note. She takes you to the highest peak and brings you down into the abyss.
Six words: `I Can't Make You Love Me.' Bonnie realizes what many women just can't-they can't make someone's heart feel something that it won't. When I first heard this song, I was completely mesmerized. Goose pimples covered my skin, my body stood still as her cool pain-drenched voice bled with agony. Even after a few years, my heart skips a beat each time I hear the opening notes to this melodic masterpiece.
`Let's Give Them Something To Talk About.' This is a cheeky tune about gossiping, nosy and rumor-spreading individuals. The upbeat melody is a finger-snapping, foot-tapping gem. Bonnie voice is gritty but pretty as usual-this one's a definite keeper.
`Not The Only One.' To her surprise she's not! Bonnie's smooth vocal delivery and upbeat melody make this tune one of my favorites on the entire album.
Pick this one up as well as her other recordings-She'll never disappoint.

I must be honest, I had heard the music of Bonnie Raitt over the years, but it was not until I heard "I Can't Make You Love Me", that I was so taken that I had to have it for my own. In this song, she touches the heart of the listener in such a way that one is comforted in knowing that they are not alone in having an unrequited love. There is such honesty and pain in this delivery that you will find yourself on the brink of tears. (Talk about cross-over appeal!) I am new to her music, however, I guarantee that I am a faithful listener now.

No Blues-Rock collection is complete without at least one Bonnie Raitt album. Like a female Clapton, she plays guitar perfectly, sings great and also writes some terrific music. On this cd are 4 of her originals. The highlight though, has to be the wonderful ballad 'I can't make you Love me'. I have heard her records played on country, rock, pop, and blues radio so obviously her music appeals to a wide range of listeners. Get this cd, you won't be disappointed.

Something to Talk About" was the title hit for this ground-breaking album that really established Bonnie as a bankable artist. Also inluded here is the smash hit "I can't make you love me", which is certainly one of the best ballads of the 1980s. Bonnie has a singular vocal style, and the qualities in her voice make her distinct and unique. She is a terrific musician, and doesn't need a back-up guitarist to make her sound sessions swing. She is a mainstream artist, and like others such as John Denver or Glen Campbell, really is hard to define in terms of whether she is country, pop, or whatever. She is simply terrific, as is this album, which if you have any horse sense, you will order without delay! Enjoy!
