"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. Yes, Nick was just as obnoxious in the beginning, but I fell in love with Luka so decided to continue reading. There were so many times I actually found myself yelling out to Nick because I could tell he was going to do something stupid or had already done it -- my husband was around once and reminded me it was just a book! Obviously he doesn't enjoy reading and doesn't understand how you can get caught up in the characters! Good thing he wasn't around the couple times I was brought to tears.
Just when you think Nick isn't going to change, you start to see glimpses of a softer side; someone who wants and needs the love that only Luka can give him; someone who wants to do the right thing but has no clue how to do it; and he really does become someone who touches your heart -- after all, how can he be all bad when you see how loving he is with Stephanie and Snowy.
I liked that Luka didn't always make it easy for him; if he allowed Nick to get away with some of the things Nick did, I don't think I would have liked it as much. And I really liked Jeana and Luka's mom. Luka's mom handled the hospital scene so well; she helped to not make Nick feel worse than he already did.
You can read this book without reading the first, but I wouldn't recommend it. Most of all, because the first book was so good, but also because this book means so much more when you have seen how he was in that book. Hope you love it as much as I did!
There were many things I liked about this book and nothing that I didn't fancy at all, there were some so-so aspects but they are only personal preference:
The big ending scene could have come out extremely cheesy, but I found it incredibly sweet and romantic.
I loved the homely atmosphere Nick and Luka created when they were home together: watching movies, playing with their dogs, talking, etc. All these scenes felt warm and loving.
Despite this book being quite heavy in the sexual side, Nick and Luka didn't jump right to the sack at the first opportunity and their relationship actually had room to develop before that became a part of their shared lives.
I liked that the topic of being gay wasn't overly full of conflicts here: there were two happily marries rockers, a mom who wanted nothing else but for her boy to find a new guy, a bunch of bisexual guys, etc.
The love story of Nick and Luka, of course.
Warning - this story is hot and steamy, so much that it became slightly too much at times for me. Nevertheless, the scenes were intense and sexy.
Even though the story revolves around a rock star relationship, there wasn't much included about celebrity lifestyle, music, rock, etc. The focus stayed on the budding relationship of Nick and Luke, not that I really mind that of course. Still, I would have liked for Nick's way of life to be more represented.
Nick - A messed up rock star who messes up even more on an epic level and gets sent to a rehabilitation center. He won't, however, go down quietly and if his life is hell there, then he will make it a pain for everyone else who has to deal with him as well. I loved his snarky sarcastic responses and attitude to anything he was supposed to do, the questionnaire answers had me grinning like a loony. He was sexy, naughty, and just a plain bad boy on a path to self-destruction without any rules or limits to hold him down - a complete opposite to the polite, proper and sweet Luka. He had had a difficult life and after his only anchor, his brother Shane, devotes himself to his long lost love, Nick feels abandoned and his life is spiraling down, luckily, Luka is there to hold him grounded. What I loved most about him was that even after he got his act together, he kept messing up, constantly in regards to Luka. That was realistic and natural that not everyone can make a 180 and be the total opposite of what they had been for years. He slipped and then stood up, slipped and stood up, etc, till the ground wasn't so slippery anymore.
Luka - As bright and positive as the sun, orderly, steady and stable - the perfect balance for the chaos that is Nick's life. A sweet and sincere nice guy who knows when to put his foot down and play tough - someone with his own uncertainties and past you can't help but root for. I like that he was forgiving and understanding towards Nick's missteps but never did he let the latter manipulate him or walk all over him, he stood his ground and didn't give up on Nick. Luka was too good to be true at times, but exactly what the doctor ordered for the lost rock star who desperately needed someone like him in is life.
I adored the dogs in this book, they were warm, fluffy and cuddly - utterly cute! Animals are always a win for me.
An enjoyable m/m rocker romance with likable characters and believable development for them. A quick, easy and sweet read.
