Yes, Nick was just as obnoxious in the beginning, but I fell in love with Luka so decided to continue reading. There were so many times I actually found myself yelling out to Nick because I could tell he was going to do something stupid or had already done it -- my husband was around once and reminded me it was just a book! Obviously he doesn't enjoy reading and doesn't understand how you can get caught up in the characters! Good thing he wasn't around the couple times I was brought to tears.
Just when you think Nick isn't going to change, you start to see glimpses of a softer side; someone who wants and needs the love that only Luka can give him; someone who wants to do the right thing but has no clue how to do it; and he really does become someone who touches your heart -- after all, how can he be all bad when you see how loving he is with Stephanie and Snowy.
I liked that Luka didn't always make it easy for him; if he allowed Nick to get away with some of the things Nick did, I don't think I would have liked it as much. And I really liked Jeana and Luka's mom. Luka's mom handled the hospital scene so well; she helped to not make Nick feel worse than he already did.
You can read this book without reading the first, but I wouldn't recommend it. Most of all, because the first book was so good, but also because this book means so much more when you have seen how he was in that book. Hope you love it as much as I did!
