I'm rounding this one up to a five star because I think this read is superior to those that I rate with a four. But I went into this novel with what I now feel is the slight disadvantage of reading one of her other books just a few titles prior. This previous read blew me away and there's just not enough distance there for me to not compare the two. So while I found Lucky to be really, really good, it just didn't quite reach the same pinnacle of greatness for me.
This book takes place in the not so distant future. For readers who may find this a reason to pass this up for fear of it going into fantasy/sci-fi territory, please don't. Not much has changed in the landscape of our country, mostly just advances to technology and security. There's no hovering cars, no alternate universes or anything. In fact, it's fairly easy to believe that these events could happen in present day, and it's the occasional reference to years of birth and ages that remind you just when this tale is taking place.
Both main characters have experienced great trauma in their lives, stemming from completely different circumstances. Both characters would likely be considered lucky to be alive by those who got the elevator pitch of their pasts. But what is luck really? And is it good or bad luck to survive? This book explores those mixed emotions as Aric struggles with his overwhelming urge to forget the past, while Chelsea would do anything to remember hers.
This author is an expert at weaving a story about what it really means to be a family, even if those in your inner circle are anything but related.Read more ›
I was given this book for my honest review.
I was going to write a quote in here but at the last minute thought I would leave it out because the book is just that good. So with that said please enjoy this review.
Aric-hot and sexy
Chelsea-pretty and damaged
Are you ready to take a futuristic journey like no other? Are you ready to experience the world in a different light where all that you have known is just a blimp on the eyelids of our current reality? Aric and Chelsea’s journey is just that. A world as we know it becomes a different reality for future generations to come. Where what we know is that of what we think. This book takes us to another time and place like no other has before but with twists of love, mystery, sexual realization, an intense knowing that our hearts are now only beginning to fathom. The intensity of this book will have you crying in all the right places, saying “Oh No” in a lot of places but it will also have you gasping at times too. The greatest part of this book is not the beginning nor the middle and definitely not the end but what lies beneath the story of which it all began.
F.D.R said “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” the fear of the unknown will become a realization within the first few pages of this book. You will be able to grasp onto this read and want to hang on for dear life till the last page is read and then turn around and re-read them several times just as I did. The fate of these characters and their friends will have you in such an awe that closing the book will hurt your heart a bit.
With a caring and heavy heart we get to meet the hunky Aric that will have your heart swooning at every turn.Read more ›
Olga I will say disappointed me I expected more from her character and not a judas. Miss June was awesome and she helped you see that goodness could come out of helping others. Jason I was mixed at first. I didn't trust him but as the book went on he became more soft and understandable. He was invaluable and I saw the kindness of who he was. Paula was sweet and I was glad her and Jason got a happy ending. Jullian just evil and so deserved all that happened to him.
Buddy what a wolf in sheeps clothing. It lets us see how one tragedy can scar and change a person. He went from this kind, idealistic loving man into I am not sure what you can call him in the end. I felt sorry for Nadine for she had no idea her husband was in so much pain that he couldn't deal and kind of went nutty.
Nadine poor woman. She was sweet and kind. It killed me to hear her story. She is such a strong woman who went through so much. I am so glad that Chelsea and Aric are now a part of her life.
Chelsea I am mixed about. She seems to be naive and yet brilliant at the same time. We get a look at what a Traumatic Brain Injury can do but at times she was a little confusing. Her passion was wonderful and so was her kindness but her childlike actions didn't always mesh with her desires and actions. It just took a while to see her the way Aric and others did. she was a strong character with compassion and was wonderful for Aric I just had to take time to reconcile all sides of her. I love her support of Aric and how she helps him see that happiness is okay to have.Read more ›
