I loved young Lucky so much that I wanted to step in and be that adult who lends a hand to comfort her through her tragic life. Fortunately, Lucky has best friends Eva and Silas and kindly neighbor Mr. Kean to fill in for me.
Lucky Brilliant is a what’s-going-to-happen-next?, I-just-can’t-put-it-down kind of read. Fast paced, with beautifully developed characters, Maureen Sherbondy has created a wonderful story, leaving us hoping for a sequel.
"Lucky Brilliant" was frustrating for me. The author clearly has talent, but it didn't click for me. The characters' dialogue felt unnatural--especially the kids, who speak like 40-year-olds. The supernatural aspect of the story didn't really impact the overall plot, and many minor characters and subplots came and went. Mainly, even though this is a character-driven drama and not a blockbuster, I just didn't feel that the story had narrative thrust. People kinda meander from scene to scene.
I did like the characters and wanted to know what would happen to them, and there were a few engaging scenes, but overall, this wasn't for me.
