I would definitely recommend this whole series (including the related stories - Jackson and Riptide).
Even though each book can be read as a standalone (I read them out of order 3, 1, 2, 4), I feel that reading them in order adds just that little something extra (like being in on a secret).
I was given an advanced copy of this book but I purchased it to support a great author.
Lucky is the story of Derek Wright, a wealthy developer of entertainment venues and exclusive resorts as well as member of the Tribunal for Accentos an exclusive BDSM club, and smart mouthed Samantha Rose, an instructor and performer in exotic dance with a real love of life. They are fire and water but there is no stopping the attraction and need they develop for each other. It is Sam whose inner strength blossoms in this relationship and helps Derek begin to understand that he need not carry the blame of a tragic event early in his life which has previously kept him from meaningful relationships.
SaFleur takes the reader, as with her other Elite Doms books, into the world of BDSM and the symbiotic relationship that bonds a pair in the D/s lifestyle. Sam is a newcomer while Derek has lived in this world for some years, since Master Alexander took him in as a self-destructive young man. There are many obstacles to overcome, dangerous people to stop and bring to justice, and differing life views to reconcile, but the struggle is worth it for the two of them.
It would be helpful (although not necessary) to read the other three books in the series as some of the other characters’ stories are told in them. This would help the reader understand more fully the dynamics in this group of friends.
As always, SaFleur has a wonderful story to tell and interesting characters with which to do it. If I had one criticism it would be that this book could use a bit more character development. Perhaps length is an issue, but as a reader, I’d like to know more of what is going on the minds of Derek and Samantha at times – especially in the pivotal scene at Accendos when Derek becomes the compleat Dom. Character motivations, before during and after, need to be clear to make some of their actions acceptable to the reader. This was not the case in previous books so, maybe it was a matter length requirements and time constraints, but I feel that scene would have been strengthened by knowing what each character was really thinking.
Still a very good book in this genre and well worth a read!
Derek and Samantha are white hot together. From the first time they saw each other you felt their attraction. Derek is a virile, powerful, successful and Dominant. But he holds himself apart from everyone but his inner circle which makes him vulnerable and a bit sad. His giving and caring ways towards those he trusts give him warmth and humanity. Sam's is talented, sassy and no nonsense. Her openness and upbeat attitude towards those around her made her likeable, charming and genuine. Her ability to connect with others draw Derek to her more and more.
I loved this story. It was sensual, erotic and compelling. Add in some mtstery, intrigue and a bit of danger, you've got an extremely entertaining reading experience. Each book in The Elite Doms of Washington is well written with powerful storylines and complex likeable characters. This latest in series is no exception.
The background suspense story of was kind of a let down. Lots of violence for so little payback.
Still, I'd reread this book again and again just for the evolution of the live story . 4stars!
