Great story, couldn't wait to see what happened next, and Holloway has a new fan.
I felt sympathy for the protagonist's situation and rooted for him to overcome his follower mentality when it comes to Lucky and become the man he needed to be to rescue his children, the father they desperately needed.
I felt disgust at Lucky and The author did a superb job, a textbook presentation in fact of a sociopathic narcissist taken to steroidal levels of self-focus and disdain for others beyond their role as a resource to meet his needs.
There are certainly aspects of this story that will not be for everyone. Some gratuitous sex and even some besitality. I in fact was quite put off by the bestiality but I found the story so captivating and wanted to see where it went that I couldn't stop reading. Also, I am a slow reader generally but I knocked out the second half of Lucky's Girl in one day.
I enjoyed the supernatural qualities of Lucky's powers. Basically a manipulative sociopath given the irresistible power to charm all he encountered. And the author does not play this down. He doesn't steer away from the levels of depravity that would be possible with a character like Lucky with powers like Lucky is given. It is truly horrifying to see the depth of self abasement the characters take part in gladly when Lucky starts to talk and his charm and charisma wash over everyone like an unstoppable tsunami. It is disturbing to consider that something like this exists but it is just an exaggerated example of what abusive domestic partners engage in on a regular basis. There are far more people like Lucky on a less intense scale than it is comfortable to contemplate. The author shows us the predator spirit of sociopaths epitomized in Lucky and it is disturbing and uncomfortable. At times you may even find yourself feeling guilty for liking the influence he has or for feeling aroused by the sexual subserviance pledged to him and afterwards reminding yourself it is a horrible thing to do, much like Kenny our protagonist does as he remembers the sexual encounters that Lucky was responsible for orchestrating on his behalf.
Overall, it is a disturbing ride but much like a train wreck I could not look away and in the end I enjoyed the story's resolution.
If you like your horror dark and gritty and like for it to explore the extremes of disturbing behavior and the depths of depracvity of true evil then give Lucky's Girl a chance. It's worth it.
This is an incredibly well constructed tale, blending horror, fantasy and historical genres in a way that gives a well paced and gripping story, taking the reader along for the ride; and what a ride, were-wolves, demons, murder, gore, sex and violence.
This story kept me hooked till the very end, sorry to see the finish and keen to find out what else Holloway has written.
Horrific Tales Publishing has done it again, brought us another great story from another great writer.
This book is different, and it won't be for everyone. If you are sensitive, you shouldn't read this. It's disturbing, gory and very sexual (not in a sensual way either), but it makes for one hell of a tale. The author has a strong voice, and he really brings this chilling tale to life.
