I like the retractable tapes in general. But, they are harder to read for small measurements. And then, they always want to "snap back", either pinching your fingers or possibly marring the item being measured. This rule will not do that but is not so good for "inside" measurements. So, I think there is a purpose for each.
Many years ago, one of the problems with these folding rulers was that they "wore". That is, after folding many times, there was "slop" in the individual sections. I don't know how much this affected the exact measurement overall. Probably, not that much. But, generally, you don't want "slop" in a measurement.
So far, this ruler has served me well. Tapes have a "sliding" hook that adjusts for either inside or outside measurements. This ruler does not. That's why, for small measurements, maybe this ruler is better, more accurate, and easier to use.
