About the Author

Catherine Marek along with her loving husband Dan
and two children are long time residents of Michigan.
They love spending family time together and
camping. Catherine is a third generation hairdresser.
Before she decided a few years ago to stay home
and raise her children she had been a hairdresser
for 14 years and has experienced fi rst hand the fears
many small children have when approaching their
1st haircut. She became an “Expert by Necessity”
at easing their fears. So good, in fact, parents would
wait hours just for her to cut their child’s hair.
She has combined her three greatest loves, children,
hair and writing in her new books, Sara’s 1st Haircut,
Luke’s 1st Haircut and the 1st Haircut Coloring and
Activity Book, in hopes that it will make the 1st
haircut and all that follow a fun and positive memory
for everyone involved.

This is a 24 page paperback book approximately 9X6 inches. This book is about a real little boy who goes to a real barber shop and gets a haircut by a real person. It is written in very easy to read rhyme. As Grandpa takes Luke for his first haircut we see every part of the experience. The illustraions are very colorful and detailed. My 3 yr old grandson is horrified by even the word haircut. I have searched locally for a couple years for a book like this and finally found a few books online. This is the best by far. I found this right after our last haircut fiasco so I don't know if it will really help; but he loves to read the book and pretend to get a haircut so that is a start.

My 2-year-old son just went for his first haircut, and we wanted him to have a book to help him be prepared for what was going to happen. The text of this book was very cute, as were the illustrations. I wish it was set in a regular hair salon instead of a barber shop, but that didn't seem to make much difference to my son. We told him he could bring along a toy, and since the boy in the book brought along a dinosaur, my son insisted that he, too, had to bring a dinosaur. The haircut went well with no tears, so I think the book definitely helped.

New things and new places can be scary for little ones. Brillantly illustrated "Luke's 1st Haircut" gives young children an inside look at the sights, sounds, smells and feelings taking place at the "Barbershop Place." Knowledge is power!
