If you like your cowboys horny 100% of the time, you will absolutely love this book. Now, I always love an M/M romance with lots of sex between the MCs, but this one was just a bit too short on plot development until newer characters came in late in the game.
The two protagonists, Simon and Luke, are more than stereotypical macho cowboys who have nothing on their minds other than keeping each other satisfied. For 10 years, they've done it, almost out in the open enough so that the whole ranch, and most of the town, know it, until the good Reverend and his bad wife come along to practically ruin everything. (This is Texas, remember). That neither of them had the courage, or even idea, of confronting those two hung with me throughout the book.
But I went on and on, and in the end enjoyed it, but was hesitant about reading the sequels because the MCs emerged from this book, and I did not particularly like them. Instead I went to Book 3.5, Luke's Present, which returned to these essentially sex obsessed men with enough "flashback" information so I didn't have to read numbers 2 & 3. Luke's Present is spectacular deserves five stars.
In this one Luke is laid low by a serious injury and Simon is beside himself with worry about his mental and physical health, to say nothing of their sex life. The way this one works through to an eventual solution is way out there on a limb, but this is Texas and things tend to go big there. Really cool denouement.
My biggest complaint remains: Why in the world do publishers only clearly show the face of one of the MC's on the covers? I think the man in the background is Simon, but Luke is the owner of the ranch--why not show his face as well? Grrrrr.
I loved them best of the three couples these books follow and was very happy to go back to them for this short story. I liked the other two couples quite a bit, but Simon and Luke are just so special to me. I was happy to see Simon finally get to the heart of Luke's fear from the flood, and his issues with getting the surgery. I'm glad he got it done. Happy to see the family and community supporting them, and the ranch doing so well.
I hope we get more from the Lost Cow Ranch!
