"Archer deviates away from the overly-simplistic and uniform children's book format, using his mixed media post-modern artistic style to create wonderful and captivating illustrations. The illustrations move with the story, giving the book a three-dimensional feel perfect to capture the reader's attention and pull them into the story."—Reader Z
"Luna Maris is written with curiosity and wonder, two things children need more of these days. The illustrations are captivating and fun, while the story keeps kids, even adults, wanting to read the story over and over."—Angelina Hicks

So says the children's book, Luna Maris, written by visual and performing artist Steven Archer.
I admit it. To my knowledge the author and his equally lovely and talented wife have no children, so I approached this book with mixed feelings. I suffer from the smug superiority of someone who has 'survived' raising a child and really did not think that someone who had not had that experience could really write a book for the toddler to ten year old set that would truly hit the mark.
I am pleased to report I was REALLY wrong.
Luna Maris can hold it's own on the bookshelf right along side such classics as Where the Wild Things Are, Stella Luna, and Goodnight, Moon. The adventures of the moon on his one day off a month make for a delightful tale of discovery and the reminder to ALL of us that everyone has a purpose and everyone is important.
The text is lyrical and never 'watered down' but for the most part is simple enough for young readers with maybe just a little help. Archer even manages to indulge his inner geek a bit by weaving science into the mix as the Moon learns about the ocean from characters like Stripey Octopus and the ancient and wise Coelacanth. Beautifully illustrated by the author, I have a feeling that this book will quickly become a favorite bedtime story for children fortunate enough to receive it, and if plush "Stripey Octopus" figures are not available soon, you may need to tap a creative friend to create one for your favorite munchkin.
I can't wait to see the reactions of my niece and nephew for whom the book was purchased. I recommend this for your kids, nieces, nephews, grand-kids, even that 4 year old down the street you get roped into occasionally babysitting. In fact, I think 'grown-ups' could use a copy tucked away in their library for those moments we also need to be reminded of the magic and purpose in our lives.

Archer deviates away from the overly-simplistic and uniform children's book format, using his mixed media post-modern artistic style to create wonderful and captivating illustrations. The illustrations move with the story, giving the book a three-dimensional feel perfect to capture the reader's attention and pull them into the story.
The story itself is new and refreshingly fun. Archer tells the tale in a way that is both fun and intelligent, detailing a fantastical adventure by the Moon while explaining to the reader just how important the Moon is in relation to the ocean. Archer even brings a Coelacanth into the tale; one might think it a bit too bold, featuring a creature one would normally only hear about in a science textbook, but this is part of what makes this story unique. Archer treats his audience with respect, feeling comfortable enough to bring science into the equation. Archer even touches a bit on the ontological (but just enough to let you ask the questions on your own).
For anyone who is tired of the same cookie-cutter children's stories and wants a unique and fun tale to share with your young ones, Luna Maris is the book for you. Archer's debut book will entertain, educate, and entice--a winning combination in this field.
Coelacanth noun- a type of fish thought to have been extinct since the crestaceous period but found in 1938 off the coast of southern africa.
" the moon met a fish. He asked, What is the ocean for?" But the fish didn't know. " well where does it come from? " The fish thought for a moment and then pointed off into the distance, " From far away . Listen... "
Just a small sample of this great kids book.
This is a wonderful alternative from the traditional children's stories, for those alternative kinds of people, such as myself. It is great as a gift for children of all ages.
