The Story of Luna Guitars
Luna Guitars is a line of comfortable instruments, made for musicians of all ages that are beautifully crafted to engage minds, spirits and talent.
Co-founded by Yvonne de Villiers, the accomplished stained-glass artist envisioned a company that would reflect designs as unique as those who would play them. She drew much of her inspiration from her bass playing mother. Yvonne always believed that customers should not just be seen as sales transactions but rather as part of a larger close knit family - the Luna Tribe.
Though Yvonne departed the company in September 2015, she left a great philosophy that remains with us to this day - while guitars may all be made of wood and metal, what makes Luna unique is its soul. Embracing diversity. Committed to social responsibility. Connecting with our guitar community. Committed to customer service. These are some of the aspects that make Luna Guitars unique. We warmly welcome you to our corner of the world. Welcome to the Tribe!

This traditional concert uke takes its design from traditional Hawaiian body ornamentation. Those designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin, with strongly geometric patterns, and many shapes and symbols inspired by the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds. Our design is primarily based on waves and sharks teeth which are also echoed as fret markers. The electric model adds the advantage of an onboard preamp. I have seen several reviews that say it took several weeks for the strings to "settle down" and stay in tune. This is not normal. This is a product of the instrument sitting in a warehouse for god knows how long with those strings on it, heat, cold, what have you. When strings don't stay in tune after an initial break-in period of a few days at most, it's time to change them. Certainly if they've been sitting in a box for months, stretched, and they won't stay in tune you need to change them. So the first thing I did was put on a $7 set of Aquilas and the difference was amazing, both in sound, and in staying in tune right off (to a point, which brings us to...)
On the issue of tuning, the bigger gripe I had with this instruments is that the tuners are not very good. They have a lot of play, and they contributed to the strings not staying in tune for as long, too, even when I put new ones on--new strings made the problem much better, but getting them to exact pitch was almost impossible with the tuners it came with. They're just really not up to par. The solution is very easy, even if you have no experience adjusting or working on stringed instruments. Buy a set of Grover tuners for about $13 (Amazon has them as: Grover 9NB Sta-Tite Ukulele Tuners, Nickel with Black Buttons). Replace the old ones (you just remove two screws, pop the new one in, and screw it back, very straightforward and simple, no experience with working on instruments needed, no drilling, cutting, etc.). That, combined with a new set of strings, took this decent ukulele to a fantastic one--it now sounds and plays like a Martin.
The neck is comfortable and the intonation is spot-on. The strings are spaced widely enough for easy fingerpicking. And it looks great. Construction was clean, no glue spots anywhere, gaps in the wood, and the frets were perfect, no sharp edges anywhere. Top notch.
I had originally bought this to learn on -- I'm a longtime guitar player but a novice uke player. My plan was to buy a more expensive ukulele, like a Martin or higher-end Kala, later, if I liked it. Well, I already like it, and after making those two improvements -- new strings and swapping out the tuners -- I don't see myself as having the need to upgrade. It plays great, sounds great, and looks great. As I said, the Martin I played in the music store couldn't beat it.
The Gretsch tenor ukuleles all come standard with the Grover tuners and are at the same price point as the Luna, but I don't think the Gretsch sounds as sweet as this one, and I have heard that out of the box their action is too high, and that's going to need adjusting and setup at a music store. Putting good tuners (and new strings) on the Luna was the answer for me.
Happy strumming! With a tiny bit of work, you will have an OUTSTANDING instrument that will give you pleasure for years to come.
The box arrived, and I rushed to open it and tune my gorgeous new Uke. But guess what; two of the tuning gears (the first two strings I tried to tune) are stripped right out of the box! I can't tune the uke!
The tuners are literally crap. Now I have to return the uke, even though I love the look and feel, and go through the hassle of finding another brand that uses tuners that actually function. I considered purchasing some nice new tuners, but paying over $30 for shipping $19 tuners is way too much.
I will just have to give up on Luna ukuleles. Too bad.
Update: I did not want to let go of this gorgeous Ukulele, and it just felt so right, so I broke down and purchased the Grover 9NB Sta-Tite tuners as recommended by Borias in a review. I am so glad that I did. The Uke feels and plays so nice, I just love it.
I am not giving it five stars because I had to spend an extra $19 to get it to a point where I could play it, but Borias is right, it is now an outstanding instrument.

I have been playing the uke for about 6 months now. Previously had a Concert Luna ukulele and wanted to try the bigger size so went for this.
The sound is really lovely, a great full and rich tone. And, as always with Luna the artwork is outstanding and eye catching without being too much.
All in all, very pleased with the purchase.
Gig bag is just a standard flimsy bag so will be getting a hard case to look after it properly.
Also, service great, arrived in about 3 days to Northern Ireland.
