For a Manned US Spaceflight Hiistorian, this is THE one-stop shop for the variety of designs and missions considered prior to settling n the configurations the US did for Apollo- the Lunar Lander, the Command-Service craft and even the Lunar Roving Vehicle used on the final 3 moon landing missions. Godwin does a truly thorough job presenting the information in a decent summary format (...as might be expected by the founder of Apogee books- that fills the niche of human spaceflight so well).

Robert Godwin has been doing a stellar job of collecting information documenting the history of space exploration. I bought this book a few years ago and have used the references he sited to further my own research into the lost history of the space program that was not developed by the American government after the election of 1968. I especially liked the CAD renderings of the old pen and ink drafted drawings of the proposed equipment from advanced apollo programs that were cut after the first moon landing. Buy two copies, keep one for your collection and donate the other to your public school library. Light the fire for space exploration and development for the next generation.

I bought this book when I stumbled across it in Borders before they closed. I couldn't believe that I'd never heard of it before then!

If you have any interest in the Space Race, especially in the Lunar exploration phases, do yourself a favor and get this book. The author has done an amazing amount of research and each vehicle is presented with a combination of drawings, blueprints and 3D renderings.

The sheer number of designs will impress even the most ardent space fan. It would be a very rare person indeed who knows even half of the designs presented within.

Excellent and highly recommended!

This book presents the space historian, or buff a level of subject coverage seldom found in most space history books. The majority of books on lunar exploration deal only with the actual hardware used in this endeavor. Mr. Godwin's work succeeds in revealing many of the conceptual hardware designs, created by scientists and engineers in the past seventy years. Superbly illustrated, with many historical photos and painstakingly created computer 3D imagery.
