Editorial Reviews

2011 album from Britain's most innovative, radical and creative Pop star. Even Lady GaGa has taken notice: 'I'm really into an artist right now named Patrick Wolf. I think you would really love him - really fantastic, amazing, from the UK'.

It's a tricky thing to make earnest pop music. The style is not well suited for sincerity, and artists have to strike a delicate balance between 1) preserving the universal appeal of pop at the risk of their sentiment being rendered insincere or clichéd, and 2) properly giving credence to their emotional state at the risk of losing listeners who don't share their sentiments, seeming preachy, lyrically clumsy, etc.

Patrick Wolf has always exuded a certain earnestness in his ramshackle approach to pop music, but his lyrics have been decidedly cryptic. Expressive, yes, but the words were not meant to be literal depictions of his personal experiences. That approach has changed a bit with Lupercalia. The campy, theatrical side of Patrick (not to mention much of the darkness) has been shed in favor of a more direct and personal approach to songwriting. Our beloved restless artist has found love, and so he's finally comfortable enough to be his own drag.

For me, this is quite a refreshing change of pace. Not just for Patrick, but for music in general. In the wake of recent worldwide economic decline, the most popular of pop has become relentlessly escapist, and the more serious strains have become increasingly somber. It's nice, then, to have an album that's so unabashedly positive, and yet devoid of any campy fantastical trappings.

The first two tracks of Lupercalia collectively offer a devastating moment of pop brilliance: hopeful, direct, tender, and exuberant. Earnestly so. The rest of the album isn't as consistently inspired as its introduction, but there are many highlights, including The Future, Time of My Life, and Together.

It's not perfect, though, as some of Patrick's gambles don't quite pay off.

What an amazing album. So many songs that simply get into your blood and work their magic. I'm always dancing in my car to them, or belting at the top of my lungs. I would recommend this album to everyone; it's a must have.

Patrick Wolf's greatest album to date. It is incredibly uplifting. A healthy relationship has done wonders for his music. Possibly my favorite musician of all time. We wish you nothing but the best, Patrick.

I have always been a fan of music that made you smile. And that's what Patrick Wolf's Lupercalia does. From the beautiful anthem-y opening track The City which includes great saxophone beats you know that you are in a journey full of Joy.

I am a huge Patrick Wolf fan. Have every album, single...etc. he has released. I loved The Bachelor. My second fave is Wind in the Wires. I have always enjoyed the mixture of experimental electronics with catchy, somewhat dark and introspective pop structures. On this new album, most of that is missing. It seems that Patrick has a new muse in his life that has inspired a sense of peace, love, and happiness. While I am very happy personally for him, for me, the resulting music comes off somewhat on the bland side. I half expected that even though I didn't much care for the album after first listen that it would grow on me after repeated listens...but to be honest, the songs are so conventional and normal...they seem to lack the depth that his work had in the past. If you don't like what you hear on first listen the songs have no mystery left to seduce you. That said, the album is well recorded. I do quite like Time of My Life...House is OK and The City is Ok too...just not something that I need to hear more that two or three times. I am still a huge fan and expect that Patrick will return to a more challenging style in the future. I also don't begrudge him success...he deserves to be recognized as one of the best artists in England over the past 10 yrs or so. Here's hoping for a more challenging record next time.

Lupercalia, Patrick Wolf's 5th album, is radically different from the first 4. While Lycanthropy, Wind in the Wires, and The Bachelor were all quite dark, Lupercalia is completely upbeat, lacking The Magic Position's sad undertones. Several of the tracks are absolutely brilliant: The City, House, and Time Of My Life to name a few. One or two of the songs become a little overly sappy, but even these are clever and beautifully performed. This is a fantastic CD and it is impossible to not to be put in a good mood listening to it. Patrick's joy is infectious.
