Like I said the movies bad but for fans of the series this is absolutely a must buy. It's the best way to watch the film for US viewers and it's great to see the Part II cast back in their respective roles. Hope Discotek continues dubbing future films that never got the treatment, especially for Lupin.
Now, for the ending. The alien thing was pretty ridiculous and came out of nowhere. But I do give it this: it worked for the context of the story it was giving us. If aliens didn’t move the Tower of Babel, then what would be next? Giants? A genie in a lamp? And besides it’s Pink Jacket, it’s not supposed to make any sense. Either way, watching the conclusion of Babylon was a walk in the park compared to those heinous crimes other parts of the franchise had (Mamo, Fujiko Mine, Lupin the 3rd Part 5) but that’s just my opinion.
ENGLISH DUB
If you already made up your mind about the movie, the main hype for this was the Part 2/Part 4 cast returning to dub more Lupin.
The Good: Oliver’s Lupin and Michelle Ruff’s Fujiko were perfect (nothing new here). The supporting cast was also impressive. I was blown away every time Rosetta sang her song and the New York mobsters were casted well.
The Bad: Epcar’s Jigen sounded off throughout the movie. Especially those scenes where Kowalski was chasing Jigen with the flamethrower. It sounded like Jigen at times, but then it slipped into Joseph Joestar (like Stardust Crusaders/Diamond is Unbreakable Joseph Joestar), to the point where the character sounded like Kobayashi (Jigen’s 85 year-old Japanese VA) if he just so happened to speak English. It just made Jigen sound way too old.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the newer casting of Zenigata. But it almost sounds like something’s changed since Part 4. It’s like poor Doug had to gargle nails to give his character a growl/raspy voice every time he spoke. It sounds less natural than it has in the past and I really wanted to hand Zenigata a cough drop through the screen.
Another reviewer mentioned that Goemon’s casting was horrible. I don’t know about that; for most Lupin fans here in America, Lex Lang IS Goemon and no one dares to question that. Maybe they mean that the voice doesn’t match Goemon’s appearance (animation) in this particular movie? I sometimes thought the same thing in Part 4 (especially since Goemon was wearing pink), but in all seriousness for Babylon the voice was just fine. Lang did a great job.
EXTRAS
Art Gallery
Amazing. Character designs and sizing charts, machinery, costumes, movie posters and more. And yes, even sketches of the winged lion statue! There were so many, I thought they were about to pull out the storyboards or something.
Trailers
Various Japanese trailers at the time of the movie’s release in 1985. They also have the English trailers made by Discotek.
Liner Notes
Extra notes about the movie. Chances are you already know what this is about.
As an aside, I like the reference towards episode 8 of Part 2 in the scene selection menu (Disorient Express (Again)). While watching the movie, I was reminded of that episode when the gang barged in on that couple on the train. It’s nice to see that Discotek and I are along the same train of thought.
FOUR STARS
If you don’t hold the movie to much logic, it’s an extremely fun watch for the more familiar Lupin fan. Voice acting could’ve been better, but the important thing is is that the family is back together again and it helps their case to dub more Lupin if you buy this. Overall, this is a refreshing new take on Babylon, a bizarre but truly unique experience.
