This is an example of film noire but in a western setting. It was filmed on location in the Superstition mountains. There are no innocent parties among the characters. The mountains themselves are are one of the protagonists and deadly at that. Well worth watching if to only to see a successful merging of two genres.

This reviewer is personally familiar with Superstitions so that is kind of cool except for the rattlesnake scene which was far too real (even if the snake was obviously rubber).

I live near the Superstition Mountains and four-wheel near them almost every week. I had to see, and own, this and while I am not a huge fan of old movies this did keep my attention and the story-line and acting were memorable. Put it on your bucket list to see at least once before you die.

I grew up in Arizona, in sight of the Superstition Mountains. I remember seeing this movie on television sometime in the mid-1960s, and until now had never seen it again. But I never did forget it, nor its compellingly-told story. It may have partly been this movie that motivated my brother and me to undertake our own search for the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine. We tramped around the canyons and cliff faces near Weaver's Needle for days at a time. But other than some really spectacular scenery, we of course never did find it. (I'm still a believer in its existence!)

But as for the movie itself, Lust for Gold is a first-rate Western drama set both in the present and in the Old West. The use of flashback in this film is superb (and I am not usually a fan of the technique). The scenery is dramatic, the characters believable, the double plot (past and present) perfectly integrated, and the climactic fight on the cliff's edge truly terrifying.

Perfect ending, too.

I saw this film when I was 10 years old and never forgot how it thrilled my imagination. Is the gold really there? Who knows? Maybe it will be found some day. Interesting location filming in the beginning and end of the film. The transfer and sound were good considering the B/W original.

One of my favorite westerns

Not your typical western or love story. Its a well made western / present day drama ( flashbacks tell the earlier story) about greed and in this one ALL the bad folks get what they deserve.

Glenn Ford stars in this thrilling action western as Jacob Walsh, first to claim the Lost Dutchman mine after killing off the other propectors. Ida Lupino does very well as the ambitious bakery clerk who wants him and his gold, but finds both come at a high price in a duel between him and her husband near the mine where an earthquake kills them both. We flash forward to Walsh's grandson who's looking for the mine. Twenty men have been murdered before him and he could be next! Surprise ending helps this rather violent, wicked tale.

William Prince (Barry) goes in search of gold in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. He is the grandson of Glenn Ford (Dutch) who discovered the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine located there in the 1880s. Before that the Indians had sealed it up after the Spanish had discovered it. To the Indians, the area represents a sacred ground dedicated to the "Thunder God" as there are many storms in the area.

Well, Willy Prince follows another explorer Hayden Rorke (Buckley) who claims he knows where the mine is located, only Rorke doesn't make it as he is shot by a sniper. It seems that a sniper has been killing anyone who gets close to this particular gold mine. Prince rushes back to report the crime to Sheriff Paul Ford (Lynn) and Deputies Will Geer (Ray) and Jay Siverheels (Walter). The rest of the film is told in flashback as we learn of the history of Ford's discovery of the mine and his association with crafty baker Ida Lupino (Julia) before we return to solve the outstanding mystery of who the killer is. And whether or not there is any gold for the taking.

As regards the cast, the acting is OK with a few faults along the way. Ida Lupino starts well but ends up overdoing the melodrama while Glenn Ford is clearly no good at all with a German accent. Thankfully, you don't really notice at first - he sort of slips in and out of something that isn't really German anyway. And his singing in a saloon sounds more Russian to me. Lupino does impress when she speaks in German to him, though. I actually found myself in sympathy with the character of Gig Young (Pete) who plays Lupino's husband, even though he isn't very nice. William Prince is a bit naïve and his narration at the beginning is fairly monotonous.

My personal triumphs in this film include the following 2 moments - 1) spotting tarty saloon girl Myrna Dell (Lucille) who I have just seen in another western from the same year entitled "Roughshod" which is as good as this film, and in which she has a more substantial role, albeit a tragic one; 2) correctly naming the killer at the beginning of the film.

The storyline is nicely layered with different sections and you find yourself siding with different characters at different times even though you are aware that nobody is particularly likable in this film. It's still very watchable, though.

Anyway, I'm off for another visit to Arizona. The plan is to stay up in the Superstition Mountains for a year just watching the moon. I'll hopefully crack this case once and for all. This film has been really useful for my preparation. I'll be taking plenty of water, some rattlesnake anti-venom serum, an umbrella for shelter from the storms and falling rocks from earthquakes, some gumdrops and lots of meat to feed the mountain lions (although the film didn't mention these).

Pity film made in sepia, but black and white version on dvd>It is however a brilliant clear and crisp picture with good sound.Glen Ford out of vein playing a ruthless killer obsessed with gold. Mostly seen in flashbacks ,but a good tough story well told. Highly reccomended.

4.0 out of 5 stars LUST FOR GOLD from COLUMBIA WESTERN CLASSICS DVD
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2018
This review is for the "WESTERN CLASSICS" from COLUMBIA. The DVD transfer is excellent. 4.3 ratio, good clear picture and sound and English subtitles. No extras. The film? It is more "noir" than Western - topped and tailed by a modern (1949) sequence featuring William Prince, Will Geer, Paul Ford and Jay Silverheels. Fillmed in truly spectacular locations, there is an aura of suspense and mystery - someone has a high powered rifle, and is killing people who go to Superstition Mountain. The major part of the film tells the story of Jacob Walz (Ford) who discovers the "Lost Dutchman Mine" and how many folk try to get him to give up the location. These include Ida Lupino as an avaricious frontier "baker"!! and her husband Gig Young. This middle part tends to sag mainly because I thought there was zero chemistry between Ida and Glenn and they talk too much, but there is action including a spectacular avalanche which is remarkably realistic considering when the film was made. There is also a wonderful attack by Apaches, with amazing shots of arrows and spears tracking to their targets. Fans can spot unbilled Arthur Hunnicut and John Doucette, and Trevor Bardette. Myrna Dell and Tom Tyler have nice small roles as saloon girl and owner. All in all, not a bad film, just not quite what I would class a classic.
