I am a golf course superintendent. I use this to take soil temps to determine when to spray certain chemicals such as pre-emergent crabgrass herbicides. This little guy is easier to read than most soil thermometers. Give it about 10 seconds to stabilize and record your temp. Consistent with other soil thermometers I have used. For the price its a great buy.

Only negative would be that it feels a little flimsy. The plastic shell that holds the components isn't the most rugged but if you take care of it it should last a while.

It has been a boon to us, trying to get seedlings in around cold, rainy days. Using black plastic mulch, it surprised us how warm the soil remained. Very easy to use and quickly reads the results. A probe protector would be a good add-on to offer or include. We will be fashioning our own to protect it when not in use.

Received product in a timely manner - 8/14

Tested the thermometer in several window beds, and found very accurate readings.

From air to soil the needle was extremely sensitive to the temperature change. Currently we are in the middle of August and the weather is quite warm. My soil is a few degrees cooler than the air. I immediately saw a temperature raise when I pulled the needle from the soil.

At $15 I would recommend this product to all home gardeners.

As always with these kinds of instruments "Care and Cleaning" is a must to maintain a good product. If you read other reviews with negative remarks - then please keep in mind how one handles a product will reflect it's performance.

This thermometer works well. It takes about a minute for it to get a soil temperature. I used it to know when to transplant vegetables to garden. It also has an easy to read display. I recommend this tool.

Used this a few times. Batteries were dead upon purchase and cost over $7.00 each! Stick with analog! But I needed Celsius and this had it.

A useful item. It turns out the soil in my raised bed garden was warmer than I thought.

No problems at all.

I have 700lbs of Combat Extreme grass seed sitting on a pallet that is totally dependent on soil temperature and when I plant. This soil thermometer, as I test the rising temps, has given me accurate and steadily climbing temp readings. This tells me of its quality. Its not 50* degrees one day and then 47* then 51*. It has been 48*, 49*, 50* and so forth as the ground warms. (55* degrees is my minimum target temperature.) I have thousands of dollars and a year's prep time resting on the success of my planting and the Luster Leaf thermometer has given me the confidence I need to plant right when the ground is ready!

Wanted to use this to check the temperature of my lawn (not garden) 4" down so I could determine when to put down my corn gluten meal. This probe broke the very first time I put it in, even though I waited until after some rain to soften up the soil. I got maybe 3" down and it snapped. Total time from package to trash - 10 minutes. I give it 2 stars because its easy to use/read and probably great for raised bed gardens or anywhere where the soil is relatively loose and you don't need to apply too much force to get it in. I can't recommend it for typical lawns if you're trying to go down more than an inch as it's just flimsy lightweight plastic. Maybe use a long nail or stake to get yourself a "pilot hole" before inserting into tough soil.
