Wicker Man meets Final Destination in Jennifer Thorne's atmospheric, unsettling folk horror novel about love, duty, and community.
On the idyllic island of Lute, every seventh summer, seven people die. No more, no less.
Lute and its inhabitants are blessed, year after year, with good weather, good health, and good fortune. They live a happy, superior life, untouched by the war that rages all around them. So it’s only fair that every seven years, on the day of the tithe, the island’s gift is honored.
Nina Treadway is new to The Day. A Florida girl by birth, she became a Lady through her marriage to Lord Treadway, whose family has long protected the island. Nina’s heard about The Day, of course. Heard about the horrific tragedies, the lives lost, but she doesn’t believe in it. It's all superstitious nonsense. Stories told to keep newcomers at bay and youngsters in line.
Then The Day begins. And it's a day of nightmares, of grief, of reckoning. But it is also a day of community. Of survival and strength. Of love, at its most pure and untamed. When The Day ends, Nina―and Lute―will never be the same.

Editorial Reviews
Review
An NPR's Best SFF & Speculative Fiction Book of 2022
"The novel’s pages are dotted with gore and loss, sure to pull on the heartstrings―and occasionally the stomachs―of even the most stoic of readers."
―Bookpage (starred review)
“[Thorne] melds traditional gothic horror with folk horror in this exceptional tale. Themes of family, community, longstanding tradition, and love are thoroughly explored in this deliberately paced novel that takes place over a handful of days. A very close exploration of grief, along with the ways it brings a community together and tears them apart, is the beating heart of the novel, palpable on every page.”
― Kathleen Townsend, Booklist (starred review)
"Thorne’s subversion of folk horror tropes and focus on small, intimate beats make for a gripping reading experience."
―Publishers Weekly
"Lute is an understated masterpiece of folk horror by Jennifer Thorne, an exceptionally talented new voice in the genre....Thorne’s prose is elegant in its simplicity, embracing a quiet minimalism that only enhances its sense of horror. Lute is a stunning achievement for an author new to the genre. This is the type of novel that will haunt you for years to come."
―Grimdark Magazine
"A creepy, atmospheric story... [Thorne] teaches a master class in slow-burn terror."
―Paste Magazine
'Dreamy, moody, mysterious, and haunting... [Lute] will capture your imagination as bodies drop to the floor."
―Charlotte Hollingsworth, Horrorbound
"Equally horrifying as it is beautiful, Lute will slip under your skin, haunting you until you've turned the very last page. Folk horror at its finest."
―Kim Liggett, New York Times bestselling author of The Grace Year
"Lute is as alluring as it is terrifying. Thorne’s prose is exquisite, her storytelling masterful, the setting a haunting character in itself. I wanted to savor every passage, but I was desperate to see who the island would claim next. I devoured this book.”
―Elle Cosimano, author of Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead
"Is there a dark side to paradise or a bright side of hell? That's the genius of Lute, a book made magic by its captivatingly isolated setting, spine tingling suspense, and characters with a heartbeat . . . or at least for so long as they survive The Day. This is the only creepy island I was actually sad to leave when I turned the last, spellbinding page."
―Chandler Baker, New York Times bestselling author of The Husbands
“Riveting, atmospheric and haunting, Lute feels like a dark, mesmerizing spell. I promise once you begin this taut, unrelenting stunner, you won’t be able to put it down.”
―Lee Kelly, author of City of Savages
"A creepy, atmospheric tale of familial drama, bizarre history and supernatural events, this entertaining story explores the nature of sacrifices and the way we sometimes become prisoners of our decisions."
― Gabino Iglesias, author of The Devil Takes You Home

About the author

Jennifer Thorne is an American author of books for adults and young readers who writes from a nineteenth-century Cotswold cottage in the medieval market town of Minchinhampton alongside her husband, two sons, and various other animals.
Born in a small town in Tennessee, Jenn grew up bouncing between her parents’ homes in various other states and countries, with books as her constant companions, before returning to New York as a teen to study drama at NYU. Though acting had been her lifelong dream, she found that she was more fulfilled by writing performance vehicles for her friends than acting in them herself. After a move to Los Angeles, she detoured into writing and never looked back.
Published as Jenn Marie Thorne, Jenn debuted in 2015 with The Wrong Side of Right, an acclaimed YA contemporary novel set in the world of presidential politics. Two YA novels followed, advocacy comedy The Inside of Out, and classical musician romance Night Music, as well as picture book Construction Zoo, inspired by playtimes with her two imaginative young sons.
In England, finding her footing as an expatriate among the rolling hills and roving cows of Minchinhampton while a pandemic closed borders around her, Jenn wrote Lute, her first horror novel and first work for adult readers.

The audible version gives a great interpretation of the work. Bringing depth and color to the story.
a dramatic ideal ology of the cycles of the world. The invasion of Roman troops change the events on the island of Lute. Believing that the sacrifice of 7 people for blessings, and luck was very bad practice. They changed the events of the seven year sacrifice until the "third world war" or the "Sea war". The people find that the random death's of seven people every seven years is immensely difficult as those islanders that stay on the island are killed in various accidents, and it seemed the luck of the draw. A young lord of lute is trying to escape his lot in life, but retain the privilege's of his history, and luck of his land finds a new lady. His father dies back home on Lute. He becomes lord. Seven years down the line in the middle of the war, the seventh year arrives. this book looks at the secrets of the island. the story shows the nature of the negotiation with the magic that created the luck and protect of the men and women of the island.
Some people flee the island for the Day, but most stay put, minimize their activities to minimize their risks, and take their chances against whatever hidden power controls Lute.
Our lead character is Nina Treadway, an American now married to Lord Treadway, Lute's aristocratic protector. Though Nina has heard tales about the Day for the last seven years, she's never actually experienced it herself until now. Still unaccustomed to being the Lady of the island, Nina has to balance her responsibilities to her family and the villagers with her disbelief in the strange customs of the island.
And once the sun rises on the Day, once the deaths start to pile up around her, Nina must face the reality of Lute's ancient unseen masters and pray she doesn't end up a victim of the island's bloody tithe.
Like any good folk horror tale, setting is a particular strength here. Lute is a small island that feels enormous, with large empty spaces broken up by small houses, stretches of woods, and visible reminders of the land's pagan past. Most of the residents of the island are friendly to Nina, but it's never forgotten that she's the outsider there, they have beliefs and customs she doesn't share or understand, and she worries, deep down, that they see her only as a sacrifice -- all very appropriate to folk horror.
It's a wonderfully frightening and suspenseful book, with a slow buildup to the Day itself, followed by chapter after chapter of unpredictable terror. Where will the next death occur? Whose neck is on the line? What lies on the small islands around Lute? Where are the strange portents and omens coming from? Is there an unknowable force behind the deaths, or is the ultimate villain entirely corporeal and physical? Even better, some of these mysteries are never solved at all, hiding dark secrets to keep you awake long after the last page is turned.
If you love subtle folk horror, you will certainly want to read this book.
