Product Description

From the dance floor to the boudoir, these are the sweet, tender hits that make men and women move, including Power of Love/Love Power; Here and Now; Stop to Love; Don't Want to Be a Fool; Any Love; There's Nothing Better Than Love (with Gregory Hines); Never Too Much; How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye (with Dionne Warwick), and six more-nearly two hours of LV's finest!

Amazon.com

The best-of-Luther thing has been done a couple of times before, but Greatest Hits lays it down well. The single-disc format means that one of your favorites might not be here, but among the well-chosen gems present are "Never Too Much," "A House Is Not a Home," "So Amazing," and "Any Love." Vandross, of course, was the reigning king of '80s R&B romance; while he was never as troubled as Marvin Gaye or as downright eccentric as Al Green, he did have that voice. Before hip-hop split the audience generationally, it was the favored accompaniment to seduction for many fans, whose number grew even greater when 1986's "Stop to Love" pushed him through the pop-crossover barrier once and for all. Greatest Hits summarizes the days when he ruled the world. --Rickey Wright

Any greatest hits album is destined to be lacking a few hits. There's no way to select every song that anyone ever loved. But this one is lacking a few major hits. "If Only For One Night," "Love Won't Let Me Wait," "If This World Were Mine," and "Anyone Who Had A Heart" are all absent from this collection. I've yet to find a collection of Luther's music that includes all of his truly "great" songs, so I've decided to make my own. I'd suggest that people interested in a complete collection of hits (who don't want to have to buy 3 or 4 CDs) do the same.

These are clearly classic Luther tunes from his great Epic Records years. The CD is a streamlined, updated, reprocessed, repackaged version of the double CD set some years back. I love the fact that one of my favorite tunes "Don't Want To Be A Fool" is included...I hate it that "The Rush" and the "If This World Were Mine" duet with the fabuloso Cheryl Lynn didn't make the cut...but nevermind that! This is still one of the best CDs, ever! I was pleased to have it in my collection, and I think the Amazon.com shopper will, too.

Why he has so many 'Greatest Hits' CDs out is beyond me. Many of these songs were on several of his previous hits CDs.
The selections on here are rather decent however and are among some of his most popular songs of his career.
My favorite songs on here are Never Too Much, Give Me The Reason, Power Of Love, & So Amazing. The rest of this CD is enjoyable too.
However I have to complain about the excessive hits CDs that his record labels have put out over the years. Power Of Love, Here & Now, & Always & Forever are on so many CDs, both Greatest Hits as well as on various artists albums too. It diminishes the power that the songs on here have.
I just wish that Luthers works weren't so excessivly marketed on so many hits CDs because to me the punch that some of his best works had back in their day has been weakened.
I for one would have to say that it is best to just get all of Luther Vandross' parent albums but if you decide to get one of his hits collections I suggest getting this one. Leave the rest of his other hits CD alone except maybe his 1997 release with that contains The Best Things In Life Are Free, his 1992 duet with Janet Jackson & When You Call On Me/Baby That's When I Come Running because at least that album offers a rare song from Janet and the new(at the time) song.
Avoid The Ultimate Luther Vandross collection that was released last year because it offers nothing new. Just more of the same songs that the previous collections offered.

This CD has all of Luther's greatest hits. This album contains the best R and B music from one of the most popular male artists from the last 25 years. I love all the tracks on this album. My favorite song is Never Too Much. This was one of Luther's first hits in the early 80's. It is a classic R and B track that still gets me moving. Give Me The Reason is another one of my favorite dance jams. Here and Now is another highlight for me on this CD. This is one of the prettiest love songs I've ever heard. There's Nothing Better Than Love is another excellent song about how it feels to be in love with someone.

Luther can also sing about falling out of love with someone. I love his beautiful duet with Dionne Warwick entitled How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye. It is a bittersweet tune about the pain of breaking up with someone. A Home is Not A Home is a classic about how a home can be a strong symbol of love even when a couple is apart from each other. Luther's voice really moves the listener on this track. The music of Luther Vandross will live on forever.

His voice was magical and the music brilliant. He will be so sorely missed. This album is fantastic for people who aren't so familiar with his music because there is a big scope of his recordings here. His voice is unlike anyone else's and there will never be another artist ever like Luther. I am so sorry that we will never hear new music from him again, but at least his voice goes on in these great albums.

When I like an artist but don't love the artist enough to buy all their albums, I'm one of those people who waits to buy the "best of" album. Usually there are several songs selected as "best of" that aren't my favorites and I wonder why certain other songs weren't picked. However, on this album all the songs are great and really representative of the wonderful songs Luther Vandross performed over his career.

I fell in love with you, before the second show. Don't you remember you told me you love me baby?

The version of Songbird that Luther pulls off in this compilation is heartfelt, soulful, and oh so sweet.

The world has certainly lost one of the great musical talents of our era.

A must have.

I just wanted to say I am ENJOYING this mix of Luther's Greatest Hits.
Luther's voice is unmatched and his gift of song is a spectacular treat to hear over and over again.
I must plug the song "Superstar" because of my great love for piano. Nat Adderly Jr's featured piano lead throughout the song makes me listen over and over again.
I am also a Gregory Hines fan, and the duet "There's Nothing Better Than Love" speaks for itself. (by the way Mr. Hines, I enjoyed your vocal, but you can dance for me ANYTIME!!)
NO ONE can sing Burt Bachrach's song "A House Is Not A Home" like Luther. The only other rendition that stands out is Joe Sample's piano interpretation from the "Invitation" CD of standards.
Luther, if I may borrow one of your earliest hits, a thousand ballads from you is "Never Too Much!"
