The explanations and diagrams are helpful and first rate; no other catechism is as in depth with the explanations or has as many diagrams to illustrate theological points. Only the Lutheran Church of Australia's Small Catechism even comes close, with very distant second when it comes to useful diagrams. This Small Catechism with explanation is right up there in overall quality with the LCMS's and the ELS' (Evangelical Lutheran Synod) Small Catechism.
Some of the explanations, however, decidedly support Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) positions. For example, any prayer, even grace before a meal, is taught as an "act of worship" and, thus, one should not pray with others with whom he is not in fellowship. This of course is one of the more "extreme" WELS positions being espoused. But then again, this is a WELS catechism! So a reader should be aware of the doctrinal positions being taught when using this catechism.
Only two negatives, however, mar this fine production. First, this Catechism uses the NIV translation exclusively as its Bible text. The LCMS's catechism uses the NIV, but favors the NKJV where the NIV strayed from the original text. The ELS catechism uses the NKJV exclusively. Second, the translation of Luther's Small Catechism is a bit breezy and slightly paraphrastic. For this reason I must give this valiant effort 4 stars instead of 5.

My wife and I came back to the Lutheran Church after a three decade absence. Although we had both been Confirmed as Lutherans, both of us felt it was necessary to go through Luther's Catechism again as a couple. This is a much better edition than the small catechism we memorized as young people. The graphics and explanations are first rate and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the Lutheran Church, or for that matter having a clear take on the theology of the Reformation as set forth by Martin Luther.
We will continue to keep this edition for future reference.

I have bought a number of these with different explanations, and this is by far the best. Practically every thought, cover to cover is well referenced. With this, and a Bible, of course, you could teach a pretty reasonable Bible class.

If your Lutheran, than this is what you need. This version comes from the WELS, but is exactly contentually with The Small Catechism from the LCMS. Only this one is better and a MUST HAVE. This one has diagrams, colors, etc. So it's one thing to read a book, but another to see how everything fits into place. I've bought many for friends and family.

The book arrived on time and was in excellent condition. Luther's Catechism is the summation of the main teachings of the bible. Luther's explanations of what we believe as Christians, really helps cement you in the one true faith.

This book provides an overview of the teachings of the whole Bible, and follows the catechism of Dr. Martin Luther. You study the meanings of the Apostles' Creed, the Ten Commandments, The Lord's Prayer, the Lord's Supper, Baptism, and many more things. All of these topics are presented with Bible verses that show this is what the Bible teaches.

A fairly in-depth study of Bible teachings, explaining what the Bible teaches and where you find that truth. Systematic and thorough for family or individual study. A wonderful tool to learn and explain to others what the Bible is about.

The "old" Small Catechism was getting a little stale in the opinion of this experienced youth ministry leader and Christian educator, and this translation is fresh and seems to be more engaging to Lutherans of all ages.
